.22 rifle and .22 pistol and some easy targets. Large paper targets show bullet holes nicely, and tin cans jump around obligingly when chased with bullets.

The shotgun can be a break open single shot .410 and the targets can be a few pop cans lying out there at 15 or 20 yards. Any old 2 1/2" trap load is fine for this purpose.

Discuss gun safety. No offence, but if you are too uptight to do this gun introduction right, have an experienced shooting friend help out. Good luck.
IME, women love .22 pistols and .38 revolvers w/ about 4" bbls.

No one here is going to believe me but I took my wife shooting once when we were first dating. First time I shot a magnum. Anyway, before we even got into the range, she had a meltdown. I later found out she watched her uncle get murdered.

I got my little sister one of those taurus .380 revolvers. For you Id get a PPQ or a PPS M2, those Walthers are amazing.

If you wanted a rifle type of thing Id go for one of those AR9 rifles. They have so little recoil and can actually do something to an intruder. I built mine from Palmetto State Armory pieces and its just plain fun to shoot and it takes glock mags. They also sell them already made for ~$500.

Even more of a reason she should want to learn to shoot. She has witnessed the need for self defense first hand

Not at all! I just deleted post because I mistakenly jumped off to a different thread. I am all good with selling pistols until the day I sell my last .45 (won't happen).

If you want her to get hooked then find a Five-Seven and $150 for ammo and have a day.

Selling a truck to buy guns when you have many is at least as bad.

women come in all different walks of life..i bet some even hate the color pink!

without knowing her, i still think a .22 is the best fun on the planet. it is my own personal favorite caliber to shoot and hunt with. my wife doesnt like guns really, when i do get her to try it, she is shockingly accurate. she outshoots my BIL by a mile. he says, in an emergency, he'll hide in the corner and reload for my wife. handgun recoil doesnt faze my wife.

Interesting thread, I am a big fan of the revolver for personnel protection, I have never had a semi auto that didn't have a "hic-up" every once in a while, never had a revolver have a mishap. A home invasion or any other time you may have to defend yourself will be a Very stressful situation, & a semi auto can cause any shooter some problems. Although the .22 is not my choice it is certainly better than nothing, and in the right hands will get the job done, remember a hit with a .22 is worth more than a miss with a .45. a couple of CCI Velocitor's in the "pumpkin" will certainly take the wind out of any intruder. The lowly .22 ranks pretty high on the list of deadly calibers. If a person is insistent on a semi auto, the Bersa .380 makes a great purse gun, I purchase one a few years ago, reasonable in price, & great reviews, mine although it doesn't get a lot of range time has been flawless. no matter what you end up with, Practice practice. Take a safety course and the instructor will give you advice. Then find a range and try out several types. Likely you will have different options.

been there and done that. took years!

forever and a day it was only 22lr (edit: forgot to mention that the .22 was a ruger sp101) and the reason was due to recoil. years later enter the ruger gp100 6" barrel with .38spl

the mind game of a Big revolver and that it barely has more recoil than a 22lr using .38spl will help them overcome this. started out with critical duty LITE....found out the recoil is the same as practice ammo.... after the first outing i was told to buy some 357 mag.
