    Hello all,

I’m looking for a good Lockable tailgate + hard tronneau cover setup, and I haven’t found much at all in terms of options out there.

I know for sure the PopnLock ($50) is out there, but does anyone know of any hard tri fold tronneau covers for a 2001? It’s a 5 foot bed.

    Thanks!

Edit: also, what does everyone recommend in terms of changing out the bed liner to accommodate for a tronneau cover? My current bed liner extends above the top the the bed so I can’t imagine a Tronneau cover would be able to fit anywhere on it.

Oh nice. This website has a specific section for the 96-04’s which is awesome.

Do you know of any cheaper models? I don’t mind getting a folding soft cover... thinking of only spending <500-600 on this one.

Basically want to have a kinda secure bed. I bought the pop n lock tailgate lock

This works, but will this fit my 2001 Doublecab prerunner? I had thought that the double cab had only 5’ and the other ones had a 5’2” or something.

I’m willing to accept if I’m totally wrong on this

    Regarding the bed liner,
I have been debating whether to get a liner for mine and have a camper top or not along with it.
You will have to cut the liner down to just below the bed rail so it can fit snugly underneath.
Scribe it with a white marker while on the truck, then pull it off the truck and cut it down with a sawsall.
That would be what I would do.

Just remove your Bed liner and spray line x in the bed and yes the cover will fit your dc prerunner I know cause my truck is the same as yours

All 1st gen doublecabs have the same length bed - 5'. Doesn't matter if it's 4x4 or pre-runner. They're all the same. The frame for the xtra-cab and the double cabs are the same, so the bed was shortened to make room for the rear doors.

The 2nd gens started coming with a long bed option - a 6' bed.

That would blow his entire budget on just the bed liner...

    Thanks for the response.

I’ve seen on some sources that the bed length for a DC 01 Tacoma prerunner as being 61.2”... meaning it’s a hair longer than 5 feet... is this info true?

I also see it above in that link for the Tonneau covers. It shows an option for a short bed Tacoma as being a bit over 5 feet.

It depends on where you take your measurements from. I've never actually measured my bed so I don't know the *exact* measurement. It is for sure a 5 foot "class" bed, which is likely the inside dimension.

But not all 5 or 6 foot beds are equal, at least for different brands. You can't necessarily put a cover from a Ranger (6' bed) on a Tacoma (also 6' bed). Body shape etc... plays a big role in what the actual dimensions are.

If it says it fits a 1st gen double cab, though, it's all the same size.

Ah I see. Thanks mate. While I have you here, if you have any recommendations for a tri folding cover for our beds, I’d be more than appreciative.

Also, while I have you here, would you mind providing some recommendation with respect to the tronneau cover and possible solutions to fitting it in (without the existing bed liner).

sorry friend, I don't have much experience with the covers.

As for the bed liner: I took mine out the day I drove it home. I hate those things. They are so slippery it was impossible to get my motorcycle to stay still because the front tire would slip around no matter two tight my straps were.

I wouldn't recommend cutting the part where it extends over the rails though, that's really the part that helps keep it in the bed. Cutting it up just makes it more likely I'll run it over on the highway, lol

Okay cool. So your bed is just exposed then I guess?

Do you see any rails or mounting points for a cover?

Exposed? I don't keep anything in the bed on a regular basis to be "exposed".

Presumeably whatever cover you get should come with the appropriate rails and mounting hardware that mounts to the bed rails.

Not much of a setup, lol... like I said, I don't have a cover. just a hi-lift jack and a custom bike rack in the front.

not a great pic of the bike rack, but you can see the right edge of it here. Other than that, it's your basic boring empty bed.
