my guess is either they broke the lock or picked as i had the tailgate locked. been looking online for one that looks similar or close to it and having no such luck.

After reading this thread it reminded me that I needed to add flat washers to my tailgate cables. Quick trip to ACE Hardware and that has now been taken care of along with the hose clamp mod.

Sorry OP about your tailgate..I hate a thief...:quickdraw:

How is it possible to steal the tailgate if it is locked? I am planning get a new taco this year and I thought the manual tailgate locks are sufficient enough.

the Center Caps also "pop out" on GM's they are really shit ... I lost mine on gravel road with only a slight washboard surface .. not even real 4x4 ing ...

I figured it out when on the drive out I saw it laying in the road and said .. hey some GM owner lost their center cap .. then i got out to pick it up and and realized it was me and my GMC

thank goodness that gas guzzler has long since been gone I much prefer my toys but if you haul any major loads you need those fullsize guzzlers.

OP sorry to hear about the tailgate .. California seems like a hotbed of this happening .....

Nothing is sufficient enough for the the determined thief... I am guessing they really wanted that tailgate and it's possible they had a master key or one that works on multiple trucks. I dont think there is a computer chip for that lock. And I dont think they make that many lock combinations. Statistically probably only have 10k to 15k lock combinations (just guessing as an example) because would it profitable to mass produce individual locks per truck sold....

So let me make sure I understand this. You had the trucked locked, meaning the tailgate could not be lowered correct? and it still was stolen!

Dang sorry to hear that. Mine got snagged over a month ago. It hurts to see her without a tailgate. Them bastard really knew what they were doing if they stole it with the lock locked. @MtnBorn semt me a link with a guy on Facebook selling tailgate in montebello. Maybe he’ll chime in here.

Here’s something a guy did to his tailgate for for extra security. Sure it can be defeated but it’s just one more thing to slow them down. Just stack security measures on top of each other. upload_2019-3-17_13-27-55.jpg

I opted to not get the locks for the decked drawer system since the tailgate locks...Looks like I will have to put a look on those now.
