Man still no release on either the Baja or Rigid SAE fogs?

I bought the KC G4's after seeing them here and doing a bunch of follow up research. I'm very happy with them.

    Latest info:
Rigid Ambers are due out in April, Bajas fogs are due out in June.

Building an SAE compliant product is more challenging than people may realize. Not only do you have to have the pattern correct, you also need to get the chromaticity window correct, which gets very challenging when talking about selective yellow fogs. When using an amber light source, you just need to pick an LED that emits the correct chromaticity and build it into a light, however challenges arise out of output intensity. When building a selective yellow light source, you typically need to find a yellow filter that will alter your light sources output chromaticity to hit the legally required region in the window. There is no off the shelf filter, because every light source is going to be different, meaning the filter will affect it differently and the resulting output will be different.

Here is an example of a chromaticity diagram. There is a very small defined region on this diagram that the lights must be within in order to be labeled SAE compliant as selective yellow fogs. I could not readily find a non-copyrighted image to share that shows the window outline, so this diagram just gives an idea of the concept. Supposedly Rigids first batch of amber lenses were off spec and moved the light outside of the chromaticity window required for SAE compliance, so being a reputable company they were scrapped, which also demonstrates the challenges for manufacturing tolerances to ensure the products land in the desired spot on the chart. Needless to say it is engineering details like these that separate companies that build SAE compliant products for legal street use from those that don't.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. I’ll be looking to buy some in not too long myself.

Do you drive with them on all the time or just when needed?

Good to know Rigid are working hard on a solution. Thanks for the insight. I might not have time to wait any longer. Are the original Rigid SAE pods really that bad on color temperature? They appear to be quite blue on your testing and in most pictures I've seen online they don't look great. Was hoping Baja would step in and release a warmer colored SAE fog but June seems so far way.

If you had to recommend a square pod I can run on the road legally to fit into a custom bumper what would you recommend?

Been very happy so far. I have 5000k HID's in the headlights and they work nicely together. I have not driven in any super figgy conditions but have been in light fog. Flicking them on and off I could see a nice difference.
I have them running pretty much anytime the truck is on. I did the fog light anytime mos and run with my marker lights on.
I think it looks great, and a but more visible on the road is a good thing.

LOL. Lets just say there is more to it than color temp. :)

Their "white" pods are very blue at over 7000k color temp. I’m not a fan of the color. April is just next month, but if you had to buy now I'd get the Rigids and run their amber cover plates. You can see more detail of that setup in post #186 earlier in this thread here.

Ok I keep coming back to this thread and reading more and more. It’s really come down to the OffRoad Town and the KC G4’s.

It’s a tough decision because they’re close in performance and price (used price for KC vs new for ORT)

I’d definitely go with the KCs if deciding between the two. The ORTown has slightly better lux numbers but the KCs have 2x the pattern area coverage and a much better 5000k light color. They have the additional advantage of not needing adapters and being plug and play.

No opinion on the 1st option, but I have the KC's. Was amazed at how easy they were to install. I had the headlights out already, so super simple. No splicing, straight bolt on. Could get them in amber from the factory.

Just so everybody knows, you don't have to remove your headlights to install fog lights in the factory locations in a Tacoma. All you have to do is remove a few fasteners to loosen the front half of the inner fender liner and you'll have more than enough access.

If you do have the headlights out though, it probably is easy to drop them in that way.

It looked like they could be done from below without removing any bumper screws. Headlights were already out, so obviously that was easiest.

What do you think they mean by "Selective Yellow"?

Looks like 4 Wheel Parts now has the Rigid SAE Selective Yellow pods available for purchase!

See my preproduction prototype comparison here.

The link is long, so I abbreviated it here! 4 wheel parts Rigid SAE Fog Selective Yellow pods

Shipping might be delayed if they don't yet have them instock. You can use code "BUYNOW" for 5% off. I've ordered a set to compare to the pre-production prototypes I had to see if there were any changes in tuning to the amber lens.

Looking forward to your review! Did you review the prototype ones somewhere in this thread? (Looking through the pages now)
