As for my situation, my wife rents out our condo and pays the difference/HOA fees etc. And she buys most of the groceries, does the cooking/laundry/cleaning. I pay for our apartment and utilities. It seems about even since even though she's paying less (and getting paid less from her job) she's contributing more to the household chores. I basically do the dishes and kick back. Works for us.

After reading this thread, I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in the mix . This summer we'll be married 19 years and we've had the same bank account since we got married. Before kids we treated ourselves to what we wanted after the bills were paid, but with the one rule that we wouldn't live beyond our means and were smart about our finances. Now we have two kids and once their needs have been taken care of we still treat ourselves to the things we want, again always remembering rule number one. She knows I like buying things for my truck and she likes buying things for herself, so we do. As long as you communicate and are honest then there should be no reason for her to get mad if you want to spend your bonus on your truck or whatever you want.

 

On the flipside, my wife and I respect eachother, and transparency is key. Can't stay mad if you're always honest and always faithful. Haha. It helps that she loves my trucks too.

 

This is a life mantra.

 

So...marriage is a glorified, long term prostitution arrangement?
