Want a hard tonneau that can't be opened without tailgate open

Just got my truck (picking it up on Wednesday) and I'm already working on accessories. I've got integrated bluetooth being installed, and I've got a trailer hitch coming with it. My next point of business is the tonneau cover.

1: I'm looking for moderate security. I know if someone wants in, they're getting in, they could just as easily break the glass on the cab sort of thing. I'm going to get a lock for the tailgate and I'd like a cover that doesn't open, or at least would be very difficult to open, unless you get the tailgate open. I'd also like a hard cover just to try to discourage knives.

2: I'd like to have full or at least 90% access to the bed without taking the cover off, OR I'd like a cover that can come off pretty easily and just put it on the floor of the bed until I get home.

3: As waterproof/weatherproof as possible of course

4: Finally, the lighter and the cheaper the better

I've found the Bakflip, which seems to meet my requirements, but it's really just more than I need. It's also twice or three times as expensive as some of the lower end covers. I've also read reviews that say it isn't all that tight or water resistant.

Is there a cheap, hard, folding cover that will sit pretty flush in when the tailgate is locked? I don't really plan on keeping expensive stuff back there, it's really just a level of deterrent. I know if they really want in they'll use a clothes hanger to try and pop it up or something.

 

I have a G4 Elite cover from Fold a Cover that I bought from Truckalterations.com that I'm really happy with. You can do a search for it on this site and there is some great info on it. I think I paid $635 for it. It can be opened from the front or back with the tailgate up or down. It folds up against the cab or it can be take off by removing 4 bolts (takes about 10 minutes). I'm really happy with it. With the Pop and Lock tailgate lock it makes the bed pretty secure and it's pretty weather tight even for our rainy weather here in Oregon.

 

Advantage Hard Hat Tonneau may be a great option for you.
i have the soft version and is super light, and super easy to take on and off. Folds in 1/3rds.

 

I have the Roll-n-Lock on my 2008 DC LB, but it sounds like it might be more than what your wanting to pay for it. But it actually locks to the tailgate and you don't have to mess with the crappy pop-n-locks.

Do you have access to your adjustable rail strap-downs?

I have the BAK G2 roll cover and I dont have access to the rails which I miss so checking out other hard covers myself.

Mine you can lock and stand on but probably out of your price range AKJ

I had narrowed down my search to the Roll-n-lock and the BAK G2 when I was looking, but I thought the salesman told me the BAK didn't lock to the tail gate? Wouldn't suprise me if he was wrong though. How do you like it so far other than the tie down rails?

But, no I can't use the Tie down rails either. I compensated by installing extra D-clips in the bed, which are much strong and can hold a lot more weight. I have pictures of mine in this thread.....

If you are still wanting a tie-down rail system you could do something like this....








Obviously it would have to go under your factory system but it's something to think about. I'm guessing if you did drill into the bed underneath the exsisting rail system it wouldn't be as strong as the factory one. Here's the website that talks about it...

Or you could also do a hybrid of both the D-ring and aftermarket tie down system and come up with something like this in the bed of the truck

BakFlip from bak industries. You lose none of your bed. it flips completely open, sits totally flush and need to open tailgate to access latches to open. But u do need a tailgate lock. Mine has not shown any sign of leaking into bed but living in socal we dont get all that much rain, I figure as long as you put the supplied weather stripping correctly on it its gonna work. its light and simple to install.
