    So what.

Every Toyota vehicle has the VIN showing to anyone wanting to note it. Once you have that VIN, you can enter it into the Toyotaowners.com site and request the service history. You don't have to own the car.

There's a yuge difference between entering someone's VIN into the app to get the service history and having a customer database compromised.

Not even sure why that was used as an example. The two things aren't related at all.

I’m not sure how that’s relevant.

What I gleaned out of the article is this: “Current and former owners of Toyota vehicles should be concerned about this breach” he says, adding “with attackers potentially gaining access to sales records, that data provides a perfect profile from which to build a spear phishing attack.”

Say someone gets an email about their vehicle and clicks a link that takes them to a false site that downloads malware to their computer. Not everyone is as cautious and could become a victim of the hack.

Supposedly name and DOB but doesn't specify if other data was also stolen.

    https://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/news/toyota-japan-hacked-vietnam-office/

Given that a lot of web sites try to use DOB for verification and password resets, this loss will hurt someone, somewhere

This is just another example of stored customer data will eventually be stolen. We can talk all day about how they should have updated their SQL database or Apache struts but it's only a matter of time. They would have eventually lost the data. Maybe they should have gotten rid of some of it sooner.

^"Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) is monitoring the situation closely and is currently unaware of any compromise of TMNA systems associated with this incident or evidence that Toyota or Lexus dealers in the United States have been targeted," Toyota Motor North America said in a statement."

This is as expected. If you ship your truck to Japan and try to get dealer service there, they will treat you as if your Tacoma doesn't exist. There's still quite a bit of regional segregation.
