I recently purchased a brand new 2019 SR5. I'm loving the truck so far. I have only used it mostly for commuting to work to this point. It's a 45 mile ride in on one highway. I just ended a trip home with a 17.8 mpg avg and typically will be around 19...

The truck is advertised as 22 highway and 17.8 is not even close. Admittedly there are a decent amount of hills on this highway and I was averaging 75 mph but this strikes me as slightly alarming. One trip into work over this last week I averaged almost 24 mpg but I have not came close to mimicking that. Not even another over 20.

Please let me know what you think and if you have any advice. Thank you very much!

Those mpg numbers are on flat ground at 55mph to achieve those numbers. Wind and hills will kill it. The truck shifts frequently on the highway. Plus runs at higher rpm, usually 3k and up when there's any grade. Your mpg is normal. I got 16.9 at similar speeds yesterday driving ,I90 for 1.5hrs. Try towing anything with this truck if you think that's bad. I towed a gsxr600 on a motorcycle trailer. Probs 800-900 lbs total with gear etc. I got 9 mpg.

If you are concerned about MPGs a truck shouldn’t be your first choice. It’s a rolling box

I live on as flat ground as you can have and get 17.5 to 19 daily commute.

SOP. Everything you can think of affects mileage. Keep track of it long term and use the moving average as your true mileage. You will see trends from winter/summer, trips, etc. Knowing you're tracking it makes you a better driver overall.
If you track it by mileage, you'll know when to fill up without the fuel guage... which is known to stop working properly, especially the low fuel warning lamp.

Speed, hills, towing, and temperature [cold] will all affect fuel mileage immensely.

I had a constant 16.5mpg on the same route each week then someone mentioned in a thread to use the S mode, my next two tanks are averaging upper 18 mpg with that being the only change. Give it a try.

You bought a $30k truck and are pissed that you’re not getting the fuel economy of a Prius? Enjoy the truck dude.

Assuming gas is $3/gal and you drive 10k miles in a year, 17.8mpg vs 22mpg is a savings of a whopping ~$270 a year. If that breaks the bank for you then you have bigger problems by driving a new truck in the first place.

How many miles are on your truck? My has been steadily getting better mileage as I put more kms on it. Averaged 11.2 L/100km on a 400km trip that had lots of long hills. I think that’s about 21 MPG US. First few tanks I was only getting about 14-15 l/100, around 16mpg.

Honestly I'm a little shocked at the fuel mileage my new Taco gets but I keep telling myself it's a truck. Mine is a not a daily driver and I don't have a long commute to work either.

I'll never understand why people expect the same fuel efficiency at 75mph when all tests are conducted at 55mph.

Slow down to 65 and see if it improves.

Best advice I can offer is PUMP UP THOSE TIRES. Do not follow the air pressure recommendation on the door sticker. READ THE TIRE itself and go just below Max Cold PSI. In doing this I promise you will see better fuel economy, and your tires will last much longer. The factory wants you to run lower air pressure so your tires will act as shock absorbers, thus providing a smoother ride. I was in the tire business for many years, and this is fact, not fiction. I run my stock tires, Goodyear Kevlar's at 48 psi front & back, and I get 20+ mpg around town. Last trip to Florida it got 26 mpg. Pulling my boat is another story, 14 mpg.

Not a big fan of this 3rd Gen engine/tranny combo. It works fine, but it's so temperamental. You have to be delicate with the skinny pedal if you want good mpg's. It pulls the crap out of my 20 foot center console, but it drinks gas doing it.

Your mpg will improve somewhat after break-in.

It doesnt even have to be flat ground, at 55mph as long as you arent climbing mountains, this truck absolutely WILL average 22mpg or better. Before I put my wildpeak tires on, I was getting 22.5 combined average, most of that my commute to work.
