    Hi all,

My first post after finally getting my 1st gen I've always wanted! She has some rust but she runs great.

I noticed a rattling noise at certain times (reverse and idle) and traced it back to the exhaust pipe leading into the muffler. The clamp is super rusted and the pipe is just kinda loose in there rattling around. I tried using an adjustable wrench after spraying some WD40 on it but can't seem to budge it. What would my options be? Angle grinder?

Now that I'm looking at it more it might be best to just order a new muffler / tail pipe as they are getting fairly rusted

    Any advice is appreciated!
    Thanks!

You may just want to buy a replacement cat back system if funds permit. Judging from that pipe in front of the muffler it looks like some inexpensive aluminized stuff that will soon be as rusty as that clamp. Stainless cat backs are a little spendy and depending on brand do make the exhaust tone deeper. Products like Gibson are pretty quiet for aftermarket though.
The other option is to cut it off and try to fit a universal aftermarket muffler but the exhaust diameter on these trucks are some goofy non standard size. 2” 3/16 or some weird thing..Also that rattling might be the inner baffles in the muffler falling apart, that happened to my replacement Bosal muffler after a couple of MN winters. Bottom line: anything non stainless or clamped is gonna rust or rattle apart especially if you live in rust prone climates.

    Thanks for the info guys.

I guess I can live with the rattle for now and probably should look into just getting a stainless setup

I'm not looking for any loud drone or anything, I'm guessing Gibson is probably the most quiet out of all the aftermarket ones?

I hear ya, I’m in the same boat right now. I hung a $20 universal oval muffler with a dump on it for now. Actually doesn’t sound too bad, it was a pain getting it to fit just cause of the goofy stock diameter.

I believe the Gibson is a single system for our trucks but yeah they are pretty darn quiet nothing like a flow master or similar chambered design.

It’s my experience that Gibson, magnaflow and Borla only are really loud when you tromp on it. When I get the scratch together I’m going with the stainless Gibson set up.

Put a hose clamp around it to jury rig a stop to the rattling if your going to drive it for a while.

:rofl:that's definitely some rigging. I'd cut the clamp off, and go grab a narrow SS band clamp for like $10, and drive it til the next thing breaks. I mean, the pipes are probably kinda sorta crimped together from the clamp and it might hold, but why?

I had a Borla on my 1st gen and liked it a lot. Every damn thing was stainless on it, and actually holds up. 3 Maryland winters on it (after I got fed up with "stainless" Flowmasters rotting out) and it still looked new. It didn't sound stock but wasn't obnoxiously loud, and that was with it dumping under the bed cuz the tailpipe didn't play nice with my lift.

is that the OEM stock muffler/pipe?

just replaced my oem with a Borla touring catback ... million mile warranty
i don't recall what the stock originally sounded like but this borla is much quieter so far ... no drone in the cab or with windows down on the freeway

I'll definitely be putting another one on my '11 whenever the stock one has to go. Not cheap, but worth it if you're keeping it and live where they salt. Walker and Bosal both don't last worth a damn, and OE is probably as much or more than a Borla system and still doesn't last as long.
