Hey all, glad I found this thread with fellow GFC owners. I really appreciate this thread so far, as reading through the 400+ page Hondo thread was getting tedious to find answers. My notes on what's next for my GFC have tripled just from this thread alone!

I have had mine since mid-July 2018, I was #44 and it was well worth the wait to get it for anyone still waiting on theirs.

I have encountered some problems that have mostly been rectified by Graeme and GFC crew, but have one that I cannot seem to fix. Strut brackets coming off randomly (fixed with larger t-nuts provided by GFC), compression latches letting in water (fixed with new sealed latches provided by GFC), and struts failing in cold weather (guess I'm just screwed on that, they're not too expensive to replace).

Main problem I'm seeing now: I get a lot of dust into the tent from the front driver side corner while it is closed up. I also noticed the bottom of the front tent panel was unsnapped, something that probably came the way from the shop. I have since snapped them down and I am waiting to see if that was the solution. The dust was concentrated on the driver side corner specifically though.

Anyone else had something similar occur?

 

I'm about 85% finished with my drawer build. As soon as I get that together, painted, and bolted down, I'll start tackling wires and lights. It's all planned out in my head.

I've got everything dry fitted. Now, I'm sealing everything up with thinned out epoxy. Next up is painting and reassembly.

I went the DIY route and built my own, LED strips inside aluminum channels with diffuser. I'm not an electrician either, but having the freedom to build them to the space I had was worth it to me! Plus good practice for when the house battery goes in...

 

Why not slip foam pipe insulation over the struts in cold weather?

 

That's pretty smart, I hadn't thought of that. I like the Camloc Stop & Stay option, which would allow one to slightly open the sides or back for venting purposes.

For all you guys that made the trek to pickup your camper, do you have any advice on any mods or items I should bring with me? I will be doing a week trip after picking it up and was curious what might be something essentials to bring for the GFC. I was thinking some sort of LED lighting but I have held off on doing much until pickup. Curious what you all suggest!

A lot, like moving around with the tent open causes the dust to move around.

I emailed their “support” and was told to unsnap the top to get to the bottom snaps. So far these “pull the dot” snaps aren’t cooperating. Even the top snaps that I have unsnapped are not proving helpful in re-snapping the bottom ones.

I would suggest every GFC owner check their camper out, this is the second assembly line blunder I’ve encountered and I’m #44. The first was far more dangerous, this one is just plain annoying.

 

Finally got my storage bolted down onto my “baseplate” I installed rivnuts so it should be pretty easy to take out when needed.

 

Thanks Man. I took it all apart and used some loctite. Hopefully it all stays together with that and being bolted down now. I’m about to drive down to LA for work so I’ll put it to the test on the 395. I already think I’ll replace the top hdpe with plywood and slam latches. Not feeling the hinges and the 1/4 inch hdpe does not feel like it will last long as a bench and climbing on top of it to get in bed.

 

Make and model? I also have a 3d printer and I am interested in metal work. Looks neat.

 

We did a 15 day trip to Big Bend and the "tic tac toe" shelving was a hit. I had previously built storage along each side of the bed over the fender wells and that hindered the ability to stand and move around the truck bed with the camper deployed. The storage space was also limited by the fender wells. The front space in the bed is somewhat "dead" space since the fixed section of the tent floor prevents you from standing in that area. Overall, we gained additional storage and made the truck bed much more usable.

Here are a couple of answers to some other posts:
For lighting, I bought 6 round, hockey puck stick-on leds at Home Depot and put 2 on each side panel, one on the tailgate cover and one on the underside of the front tent floor and they work so well I won't pursue any changes.

My dust problems were all from the area around the tailgate and the gaps between the bed and frame at the rear corners. Some caulk and ESI Tailgate Sealing stopped 95% of the problem.

 

I just got my camper Friday and already put levels on and put a couple nets under the bed panels.

What kinda cab rack you got there? Looks like it cuts off perfectly underneath the overhang.

The nets are looking good, I may do that and the bug nets soon

 

I actually had a guy from here make it. I'm not sure if he is still making them.

 

Any chance you could post a full photo with it? I know that cab rack compatibility with GFC's was a big issue for some.

I've been wanting one mostly just as a wind faring/light rack, maybe some light storage up there too.

I changed the hooks on my net to carabiners because the hook already ripped my bag when I was messing with it. And I put a d-ring on my tailgate so I could attach some p cord to pull the tailgate closed.
