Any woodworkers?

Anyone have any tips on straightening out warped interior barn doors? I built 2- 55x86" Pine doors out of 1x6" and they are both potato chipping. The results in misalignment where they meet.

My idea was to use a low profile turnbuckle on the backside and try to crank it back straight but I know that opposing the natural tendencies of the wood is not always a great idea.

Also, my dad is building two cribs for the nursery out of red oak and they are turning out to be seriously badass.

 

So if I take half the screws out of each end it should straighten itself back out?

 

The "potato chipping" you refer to is called bowing (from what it looks like in the photo anyway). If they are bowing in opposite directions, is there any possibility of turning one around so they bow in the same direction?
Did you purchase the wood from a big box store? If so, it's likely that the kilning process wasn't exactly the best and you're dealing with either excess moisture content or too little moisture content.
Unfortunately, there may not be a whole lot you can do. Wood movement can be extremely frustrating, especially after you've already started to shape and create joints. Best thing to do is understand how and why it can happen and take it into consideration at the beginning of the project.

Are the back sides of the doors finished too?

 

I did source from big box. I contacted a local cabinet supplier and the price was the same minus an hour drive so I just went with Lowes.

I sort of expected it going in, but I hoped that having cross braces and opposing grains on each end would minimize it. I'm OK with some movement, and I built that into the vertical boards by lapping each joint and providing some space between each board (excessive screws might negate that anyway), but the bowing I did not expect.

What do you think about putting a turn buckle on the backside from corner to corner?

Another thing I am trying to consider, is letting them sit through a season or two before making adjustments. That way I can see how they move in the summer vs winter.

Negative sir, that is an 8' opening into our nursery that I needed to close off.

I think you're better off with letting them sit for a little while, rather than using the turnbuckle. I imagine that, while it could help the bowing, it could also force the stressed boards to warp in other ways, and you could wind up with some twisting.
I guess there's no way to adjust the rollers or the rail, huh?

 

Haha. This reminds me of what a co-worker told me one time as we drove by one of those giant chainsaw carved bears. I said "Man, can you imagine how much time that would take and how hard it would be?" And he just said, "Hell, that would be easy, all you have to do is cut off all the stuff that doesn't look like a bear."
