I was driving home and saw a rock, moving in slow motion towards my windshield, and SMACK!! Now I have a cracked windshield. I would have turned around and chased that dump truck down, but it was rush hour traffic and he would have been long gone by the time I got turned around. Pissed would be an understatement. I just turned 5500 miles on it.

Question is: Does Toyota sell the factory windshield, or would a local glass replacement company suffice?

The cracks you see, have already spread across the whole windshield. [IMG]

I guess I'm the first to get a crack in a 3rd gen windshield!

I have a question. Did you shoot a bb at your window or possibly throw a rock at it?

ive been rocking a crack for a few months now, its right in line with the hood so doesnt bother me much right now but ill get it fixed soon. I'll probably go with a local glass shop, if your deductible is low enough itll be a cheap fix

    Why would I do that?

I thought we were just asking silly questions in this thread. ;)

Yes, of course Toyota sells the factory windshield but a local glass shop would also suffice. If you are going through your insurance they might have a preference but it shouldn't matter. You are able to take it anywhere.

Safelite is who I’d call had several done from them no complaints other than I noticed in cold temps I hear what sounds like the glass moving or something, the seal is never as good as it was from factory.. but other than that it’s a painless process and they come right to your house..

I hate that my truck won't have an OEM windshield in it, after it gets replaced. I just hope it holds up and lasts as long. I've never replaced windshield before, so I'm not sure what to expect. I still have new truckitis and it really breaks my heart to see this crack now.

safelite will get a factory windshield from the local dealer if you ask them to do so (they did for me on a bmw I used to own) but, they will charge you more vs a 3rd party manufacturer.

Do you know what a factory windshield would cost? The lady I talked to at the local glass shop says they use Pilkington glass and it's high quality. If the factory isn't much more, then I'll go that route. If I can save on the replacement from the local glass shop, I'll go that way.

This is exactly what happened when my windshield broke and I wanted OEM . Dont worry it will get fixed. I had this happen on my new truck with 2500 miles and it happened first day of vacation pulling into the parking lot at the beach. Shit happens...

I’m fussy with replacement windshields but too cheap to buy OEM glass. My work exit is shared with 3 rock quarries and I’m replacing 1-2 a year. I have looked at safelite and a local place called general glass. They are baby butt smooth with no distortion looking side to side. I call and price those 2 out. I’ve used both. Now techniglass is like 10 panels glued together. I was glad when it broke. Wavy as hell. The first 2 mentioned companies are as good as OEM.

Pilkington is the manufacturer for the toyota factory windshields (at least it is for the tacomas built in texas). Check your windshield. If it's pilkington, it will say so right under the word Toyota in the bottom lefthand corner of the windshield (i.e. driver's side). So a windshield direct from pilkington but just without toyota branding would probably be same quality as the toyota branded one

Dealers can get a Toyota OEM windshield, but they will usually farm it out to an independent installer. You have TSS? Use a Toyota OEM windshield if you want the system to continue working. The TSS system may need recalibration at the dealer also ($$$). Go through insurance if you have glass coverage with small or zero deductible.

I'm pretty sure the glass Toyota uses is Pilkington. so sounds like you will be good to go there.

Pilkington makes a lot of OEM glass. It's on my Acura and my Tacoma. My Camry had the factory windshield replaced by Safelite and it is also Pilkington, just doesnt't have the Toyota logo on it.

There's no way I would let Safelite put a windshield in mine. Every glass company not named Safelite will give you an upfront price on a factory windshield. Safelite will act like you want a Rolls Royce glass in it if you don't want their crap.

I bought the windshield warranty from Toyota and ended up using it. Safelight is who they used and they did a great job and the windshield is identical as far as I could tell. Even has the GoPro mount. I've used other companies before and have not always had best results. Scratches and sloppy work around seems for example.

You should be able to fix that with a company that uses epoxy. My OEM one is Pilkinton and the dealer says they sell the same one as factory, I just don’t like the original seal being replaced, personally
