    Hi guys, my Taco is a 1st gen 2004 access cab TRD Off-road SR5 V6 3.4L manual. There’s a hitch and a 4 wires connector. Don’t know if it’s factory installed but it’s a pretty clean installation.

I read a lot about tow capacity and tow package (tacoma towing bible) and I’m pretty much set with everything except that I have one last question to my mind: How do I know if I have the tow package on my truck?

Here’s the door sticker picture. Thanks in advance for your reply.

I'm curious too. I don't think my truck has the towing package cause it has a U-Haul hitch on it & trailer plug installed on the bumper but I do have the HD fan fan clutch that comes with the tow package.

The only thing Toyota puts on the tacoma needed to increase what it can safely tow is the receiver. It doesn't matter if it's a Toyota or an aftermarket hitch. Everything else on the package just makes towing nicer.

Put on an extra cooler and bigger alternator and you're pretty much identical. Neither are needed.

The hitch will have a black sticker with white text with some disclaimer, and say “TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, INC”. There is also a part number stamped into where the hitch receiver is welded to the cross member.

Here's the sticker on the hitch, so my question now is: If my hitch (supposedly from Toyota) is rated at 5000lb, do you think this means I can tow 5000lb with my truck! Otherwise, they wouldn't install that hitch! no?

Read your owners manual it says it all in there. The 4 cylinders are rated at 3,500 pounds. The v6’s are rated at 5,000 pounds.

Here's my manual. It's all about the Tow Package thing. That's why I'm struggling so much.

Don’t worry about the towing package thing. It didn’t come with much.

The “without towing package” really means “without tow hitch”. 3,500 pounds is the maximum weight for the bumper ball hitch.

Wow Zero4, 10 000lb!!!!! this is not a taco! Where did you find this? (the second sticker) But thanks for the 3rd sticker who confirm that I DON'T have the tow package. But like BartMaster1234 said:

That makes a lot of sense to me. Thx guys for all the posts. I now feel safer to pull an 18ft camper, 3000lb dry weight, 5000lb GVWR, full weight distribution hitch and electric brakes. Have good vacations Y'all.

Hey Zero4, you should have left the 3rd sticker there. It was very interesting. It was answering the ultimate question of that thread. It was saying if the core of your fan is green, you have the HD fan (tow package), if it's orange, you have a normal fan (no tow package).

Ok here it is again. It's from a 03 pdf manual that I found online. Says 10,000 is max for truck & trailer including occupants, etc. Never knew the manual actually showed you how to tell which fan clutch you have, I thought this was just info you had to find out at the dealer or online. That's how I found out. Again, I have the towing/green fan but I don't have a factory tow hitch.

I wish I had the original manual for my truck. Anyone know where to find a hard copy for an 01 other than ebay?

Old bump, I’m in the same boat here. Since my 2002 DC didn’t have a hitch, I’m assuming no tow package. My issue is, I’m about to order a new Aisin fan clutch from RockAuto and they are asking (for this particular brand only for some reason) if my truck has a tow package or not. Is it safe to assume, no signs of ever having a hitch means no tow package?

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
I saw that years ago in the manual. 10k has got to be GCWR. Pretty sure something got screwed up on the manual printing order way back somewhere between Japan Corporate and California or where ever manuals were printed. Send us the video of a 1st gen safely towing 10k through the pass.

Same here, trying to order a fan clutch but don't know whether or not it has a tow package. Did you find any info?

Just say it has the tow package. It won't hurt anything, bolts up the same.

just some window vents and a tonneau cover - for now...
Westool, do you have any additional info on tow package fan colors? I have a 2nd Gen with a pink fan shaft. I can't find any info on it in the manual or on Toyota.com.
