What is the proper height for a trailer hitch for the truck? How to choose the best hitch for truck?

That’s a pretty vague question that can’t be answered right without more details.

In general though the trailer should sit level with the truck, so the rise/drop in the hitch is dependent on that.

^^ This, the trailer should be level, which depends on it's wheel height and your trucks receiver height.

I have a small bass boat that I normally haul with the Taco which has a 2 inch drop hitch. I decided to haul it with my Outback for a longer trip a few weeks ago, but the OB is lower to the ground and wouldn't work with the hitch I had for the Taco. Ended up getting an adjustable hitch from Home Depot for about $45 and it is reversible, meaning it can drop or raise the ball with multiple settings.

If you're not sure what drop or rise you need, or if you need to haul multiple different trailers, I'd recommend getting the adjustable hitch. Also make sure all the other specs match up to what you're hauling, like towing capacity, tongue weight capacity, ball size and shank diameter, hitch size, and class.
