Just had mine stolen last night and need to consider the options once I find a replacement. There's no cable even showing anymore. Is it possible for a thief to reach over the tire to cut the cable, or do they have to have a crank to lower it down? I often see pickups driving down the hiway with the cable and retainer dragging, and I kind of laugh to myself; not anymore. The truck was parked on a fairly busy street overnight. I'll be sure to put some type of lock on the next spare.
I'll consider the CCW option, but my real vote is to build more prisons and fill them up.

    Fixed.

    I fucking hate thieves.

In the last year or so there has been a lot of car break ins and stuff in my area. The police think its just local kids. Thus far nobody has been stupid enough to try to steal stuff from my house, even though we have four cars in the driveway.

A CCW permit would be useful in California. I got one once I moved to Northern Nevada but there is really no need so I let it expire. That’s the irony as I see it; you can’t get one where you need it and it’s easy to get one where you don’t need it.

Anyway has anyone tried the spare tire lock you can get from Toyota?

I like the way you think. It's alot less than they deserve though. They deserve the flaming fire instead. End up spending time in the hospital - might make the scum bag think about doing something illegal or thieving.

I bought one for my 4-runner, just a flexible steal cable of sorts. I then realized that you couldn't drop the spare tire on it unless you opened the hatch. So I still put the cable on, just used a piece of wire to hold it together though :D If a perp sees the cable, they are likely to move onto an easier target, even though its easy to cut off.

When I picked up my tacoma, I took it off the 4runner and put it the taco in the dealer lot...with a lock this time ;)

Unbelievable. I was airing up tires just now and found my spare was ripped off. Assholes. And somebody tried to burglarize my house two days ago. Luckily for them, my wife was home, not me, and the only damage was that they had to hear her telling them where to go in her finest New Jersey. Nobody says f$#@ like a pissed off girl from NJ. I guess I need one of those spare locks.

Follow up on spare tire locks: got the Toyota one from a dealer in Dallas. It installs easily. It adds a collar to the attachment so the spring is covered and thus the thieves can't snip the cable through the spring or compress it to get to the cable. If someone had a small wire cutters, could still reach through the lightening holes in the wheel and cut the cable, but it would require small hands and the right tool. Then it provides another collar that covers up the crank screw and requires a McGard key that you attach to the end of the crank. That piece is a press fit, and they don't tell you this but it's helpful to have a 2" wooden dowel about 4" long to bang it into place (I used a rubber hammer, just a couple of raps to set it) so it doesn't just fall off. Seems pretty well attached once you tap it on. Lowering the tire requires hunting a bit with the key before you find the right orientation for the key to engage, but it's a minor problem. Hopefully this will at least dissuade thieves who are in a hurry.
