Adopt don't shop. As others have said, check shelters. If you're looking for a certain breed then there are tons of breed specific rescues out there. Don't be afraid to travel.

Sounds like the dog had some issues. It’s tough. I’ve had a few difficult dogs in my years. Training for the dogo and training for human are important. Don’t blame an entire breed of dog for an individuals behavior. Sorry you got the sharp end of the muzzle. I’ve got a pit mix that would love to cuddle with you and change your mind on breed biases.

“Petfinder.com” or “RescueMe.org” will list dogs up for adoption from most breed rescue groups and animal shelters. Allows you to search by breed. Breed Rescue groups are a good bet because they foster the dog for a couple weeks to learn the dog personality to determine if the dog will be a good match for you and your lifestyle.
Plus you’ll likely got a pooch already house trained.

Family had a Lab/Pit mix when I was younger, great dog but ended up mean as hell in the older years. Every dog breed has certain purpose, that dog was perfect for my Dad on the job site since nobody could touch his tools without gettin a nice snap:D, now nice around kids like me not so much.Just not for my lifestyle or future family. In Sonoma County its actually mandatory to sterilize Pit Bull and I would be open to having a future litter with the dog we get. Not saying it isn't wrong to force someone to sterilize the animal because its Merica:oldglory: should do whatever the hell you want

With this statement, I implore you to at least read the history of the “pit bull” breed. What most people call “pit bulls” aren’t really a “pit bull”.

Really, read the background and history of every dog you can. It’s a great eye opener.

Fun fact: Staffordshire terriers were commonly called a “nanny” breed during the western expansion. They are great with children and great for protection while still being extremely loyal to the pack.

All this said, I realize that being bitten by an aggressive dog can be an emotional and mental block for things such as this. I just hope that you adopt, regardless of breed you choose.

Quite familiar with what a Pit Bull is. Including the American Pit Bull Terrier that did that to my roommate which means it is by definition a Pit Bull. Originally bred for fighting Bulls and bears.Later used in dog fighting until the late 70's
Fun Fact: The "nanny breed" is a true myth that was created in the 1970's by the club owners of the breed to try and protect the breed. This myth "nanny breed" has been denounced by the very site BadRap you suggested.
I know Pit Bull's don't have a true "Lock Jaw" like most people think, trust me I may be young but have done my research and been around enough dogs to know what breed I want or don't want. Thanks for the advice but I will specifically be looking at breeders for the most part. Different strokes for different folks. Personally had great experience with breeders every dog does need a home so adopt from a shelter if that's your thing more power to you. America home of the free

20190406_201239.jpg this is bill. My first rescue dog. He's a chiweenie. And loyal to death. He camps, rides in the truck. He is a loveable lil guy that had a rough life before we saved him.

Mark Twain wrote of the nanny breed, as did many writers of the times. It’s well documented. But, ‘Murica.

Just trying to be helpful. Good luck.

I respect your point of view. But just remember that a dog from a breeder doesn't necessarily gaurantee you a perfect dog. You can find great dogs at shelters or rescues. I adopted my pure bred Boxer from a rescue 8 years ago and he's been an amazing companion and has had great health. We adopted a 10 week old Rotweiller mix from High Platue Humane Society in Nor Cal just last summer. The mom was a pure bred Rotweiller and the dad was a Pit mix. The mom's owners surrendered the litter and we got a beautiful brindle pup who topped out at 52lbs only. And we didn't have to dish out thousands of dollars plus had all vaccinations and the spay paid for. If you do end up going through a breeder, just make sure you're informed and avoid supporting a backyard operation. Cheers and good luck.

Please do your research before you go thru a breeder. There are many puppy mills out there and tons of shelter dogs. But your choice and money.

I will offer a place to check, rocketdogrescue.com. I volunteered and moved dog food for them after the Santa rosa fire. Nice people and straight forward to deal with.

Alright!!! People I know what a puppy mill looks like!!! I appreciate the advice and numerous stories of successful adoptions I truly do applaud all of you for saving an animals life. Our first two family dogs were adopted through shelters with the last 3 coming from breeders. The point of the thread is to point out if a someone knew of somebody who was having a litter in the Bay Area so I could avoid a puppy mill or rotten scumbag more worried about a profit than the animal.never even searched craigslist or any of these sites so thanks for the advice, truly. Nothing against anyone and their views I just like the idea of knowing the dogs mother, father and people who raised them.

Breeders are just alot less favored nowadays. Lawmakers are actually shutting down alot of these places or making it difficult to become one.

crazysccrmd........Yeah, you got issues I think.

Both my kids got 'shelter puppies': son got a lab/shepherd mix and daughter got a pitt bull/mastiff mix. Both good dogs. Not sure how my daughter will do long term with Ellie.....she is 60ish lbs of pure muscle and her tail (not docked) feels like a piece of rebar whacking you in the shins when she gets excited. Pushing a year and a half old...a big baby!!!

Personally I have had: 3 Alaskan Malamutes, a beagle, 3 Brittanies, and an English setter.......no more dogs for me.
