It really depends on what you like and how you will use it. The hard cover is more secure, but the soft cover will roll up completely out of your way. I went with the soft roll up cover because I do haul stuff quite a bit, but wanted something to cover those items I keep regularly in the bed that are not very large. Are you looking for security, looks, or function?
As for finding some good deals, sometimes you can find the OEM hard cover in the marketplace https://www.tacomaworld.com/forums/3rd-gen-tacoma-parts-marketplace-2016.202/ that a member didn't want but it came on the truck. Just the other day there was someone giving one away for free.
There is also a thread dedicated to bed covers that you may enjoy https://www.tacomaworld.com/forums/tonneau-covers-caps-and-shells.198/
Good luck in finding what suits you best, there are many options out there as you will soon find out.

    It’s up too you.

Hard durable and fixed. A diamond is awesome and big bucks.
Soft less so, some are especially disposable if you care about that sort of thing.

I have never been able to determine which I prefer and have held off buying for three trucks now and have no felt I’ve really missed much, but I use my truck as a truck regularly.

I have the OEM hard cover. Came with the truck. So far I like it.

I don't keep a lot of stuff in the back, but I have the MX4 Backflip. The few times I have actually needed a cover it has done great. I like the security aspect of a hard cover personally.

Personal preference. It comes down to which do you want more, convenience or security? I opted for security with the hard top.

My 19 came with OEM trifold hard cover. In the rain, when driving, there is a little water leakage, down the bed sides. Other than that, the bed stays dry. I’ve been happy so far.

I like my tri fold hard cover . I use my bed a good bit but not heavy or big stuff I use my trailer for that . The tri fold I think might last as long as the truck seems well made . I even use cleaner on the bed and cover so they great .

I’m wondering if gas mileage improved a bit with either a soft or hard cover on.
