That's hogwash. If the OP is describing the problems correctly, this is NOT normal behavior for a 3rd gen and YOU know it.

Ha, yeah, I totally agree. To everyone saying "so and so is normal" -- it's really not. Like, did you even test drive your truck? Do you even know what a transmission is supposed to feel like? Do you even lift, bro?

Seriously, though, it's a car, not some magical box of mystery. Mine has a transmission that shifts correctly, will go "waaaah" when I press on the gas hard because it wants to go faster, and generally just does its thing. It acted this way when I test drove it for a good twenty minutes, acted the same way on the way home, and 18 months later... guess what... same.

So if your truck is jacked up, make some noise. It's totally not normal. If anything, these things are supposed to be boring and just work, which is 75% of the reason people even buy Toyotas.

That said, I have my doubts about OP's account of things. Seems a bit hysterical for my taste.

Yeah, this seems very strange. When I first bought my '18 TRD Sport, I could tell the transmission was different. This is my first automatic vehicle. I came from a 1st gen Tacoma in a manual and an automatic was very new to me. I could tell that driving on the highway was a bit of a challenge and there was just something off about it. I took it into the dealer and told them about the gear searching on the highway and they did a complete re-set. Now, it drives exactly how it should. I'm more than happy with how the transmission is now.

I've never really noticed the "downshift" problem so many talk about. Sure, going up a hill it downshifts but it stays downshifted until things flatten out. Every auto I've driven does that. I know some notice it more using cruise control but my other cars have done the same thing with cruise control. Would be nice if it could tell it's on a hill and not upshift and lose power and have to downshift again. Might be more noticeable in the Tacoma because it's a bigger vehicle.

The one problem I have noticed is the hesitation or sluggishness when accelerating hard. I have found that how I use the throttle seems to help or hurt and so I've mostly adapted but the other day I was making a left turn onto a busier road and had to back off the throttle a bit as I was making the actual turn and then when I accelerated again it was very slow to actually start to speed up. Again, I don't see this often but at times. And I've had the "stumble" TSB applied. In all honesty didn't seem to do much.

I realize not much help, but I think it's less an issue with the truck and more just a matter or learning how to drive it. It has some quirks and in time you figure out how to work around them. I guess the trick is finding out what's a normal quirk and what's truly an issue to get the dealer to fix. Sorry, I don't have any magic wand there.

If op's post and subsequent posts are truthful, then he has a lemon. Those conditions are far from normal. I hate to be "that guy" but my 2018 ran perfectly after the TBS was applied, and my 2019 has run and shifted just fine from day one, getting better it seams as it broke in and the ECU learned.

What people coming from larger and/or more powerful vehicles should realize is the 3.5L AC Tacoma engine is marginally powered for the size and weight of the truck, and the torque curve is at max at higher RPMs. You can comfortably get around, haul and tow with it but under heavy load it will seem weak. Punching the peddle will force it to a lower gear with higher RPMs in an effort to find the peak torque. Tuning the transmission fixes a lot of this but it's still a little engine in an almost full sized truck. Test drives should alert people of this.

    A few.
2nd gen's had there problems as well. I remember 10 years ago when I was on the forums, there were lots of complaints and problem claims made by people. My 2009 had a ptoblem with delayed shifting. Had a reflash tsb done at the dealer and never experienced it again. Also the radio unit had to be replaced.

I have that one issue u cited regarding taking your foot off the gas and then resuming acceleration and having it feel like you’re in neutral. I know exactly how to recreate this and sometimes I do it for fun because I am bored :) definitely annoying when actually wanting to accelerate, however. Hoping my ordered OVTune fixes that

Come on, OP. You're either trolling pretty hard or you're about as smart as a bag of rocks. "7 speed transmission" "CVT".:facepalm:

UPDATE: I appreciate all your input. Took it to a totally new dealer today. Explained from beginning to end, told them the responses I received from other dealer and whomever applicable at the time, and showed them proof of my complaints. This dealer wouldn't even let me drive it in the building. They told me that it's ridiculous what happened at the other place. They seemed very concerned and made it clear that i should have never been given the truck back to leave with unless it was fixed which they could clearly see was not the case they will be looking at it tomorrow. I know it's not a 7 speed btw and also am very aware it's not a CVT but that's some of the BS I've been fed from the first dealer. My past vehicles were a 22RE 93 pickup which atill runs and was given to my father, currently has 388k on it. My plow/hunting/offroading truck is an 01 3.4 taco and has 374k hard miles on it, have a 17 rav4, and my beater is an 02 corolla which runs amazingly. So yes I am a Toyota guy and have been since I got my license. I drive everything and work on everything that needs work so the comments about not knowing how these trucks r suppose to feel can stop. There is clearly something wrong, I shouldn't need to pay to have an aftermarket flash done nor anything of the sort. Once this is addressed properly and fixed I will update u all and who knows what could happen. Obviously most recalls and lawsuits arise from people having issues and attempting to have them corrected. Things must start somewhere. Kind of a backfire but If i didn't take such good care of my 2001 taco, maybe they would have given me a new frame and I wouldn't be in this damn mess with a new truck.

I also work on heavy trucks and thought why the eff would I wanna shift on the way home everyday after shifting these pigs. I wanna shift now :p. On another note I wanted my 6ft bed more...

Please keep us posted, as I do have similar issues with my auto but have been brushing them off because I feel like my dealer will not take a real serious look at them, and am probably better off handling them myself.

Haha. I’m digging the odd roady. I’m sure your wife appreciates your hard work:thumbsup:

My wife is all about learning how to drive a manuel, so we shall see how that goes. This m/t is pretty easy to drive so I have faith.

I told myself that after giving in and getting an auto with my last car ( 335i BMW ) for the same reasons you did (wife), I was going to get exactly what I wanted. Cement, M/T with black badges and TRD pro rims and some nice tires. I’m in love and the wife loves it also.
