Hey all, so as the title states my ARE key as lost by the Toyota dealer along with my trucks key. They were good about the entire situation and reprogrammed a new key for me. How do I go about getting a new key for my cap? I bought it used and only have one..

    Thanks

Locksmith. A good one should be able to look at the lock, pick out a key and using a file make you one in about five minutes. Seriously.

Excellent thank you, I'll call one tomorrow. Didn't even think about a locksmith.

I got a new handle with lock cylinder and 2 keys for about 20$ off eBay for my ARE cap. One of the pins fell out of the tumbler and wouldnt unlock so i ended up breaking the lock and replacing it.

Hit up the local lock Smith in the area and was quoted $196 to pick the lock to get the serial number. Then called the local ARE dealer and we went out to the cap and tried a bunch of keys. Luckily ARE only has 50 different cuts in their keys, and they had my key number in stock 2 for $10.

Holy crap. It's been a few years now but the last time I had a locksmith cut a new key was when I lost the one to the back door on my old FJ-40 (I was out of town and needed one). Older fellow at a small town locksmith and I drove to his shop; I think the guy charged me $20. When I had one of my VWs completely re-keyed it didn't cost as much as that guy in MA wanted to charge you. That's robbery.

When you open the rear window there should be a small plaque riveted to the roof to the left. The model and serial number should be stamped on it.

When I got my truck the dealer didn't have the keys for the cap. I had a bunch of keys laying around. Found a key that worked. It was a key for the cable gun lock.
