It is absolutely a bad idea to engage 4wd on dry pavement. The transfer case has no way to compensate for the difference in tire circumference. Usually the rear tires Have less tread then the front ones do, due to them doing the most work. Over time this will severely damage either the transfer case or one of the diffs. Likely the transfer case though since it is usually the weakest link.

It has nothing to do with tire wear, ever hear of doing tire rotations?

When you drive on pavement in 4wd and make a turn, especially a sharp turn, the front differential is trying to apply equal wheel spin to both front tires when in reality the outside tire needs to turn faster = binding = tire chirping, or stuff (axle most likely) breaking if you're unlucky.

AWD and Full Time 4WD vehicles can safely cruise around with 4wd on all the time because they have a center differential, which our part time 4wd trucks do not have.
Tire wear/circumference plays no role in the matter unless for some dumb reason you have different size tires installed front vs rear.
