I grew up an hour north of the Florida Keys and if we didn't head there for vacation, Islamorada http://www.fla-keys.com/islamorada/ we went to Sanibel Island http://www.sanibel-captiva.org/
Daytona, Tampa, and Orlando aren't all they are hyped up to be. They do have some killer amusement parks, but to get away and feel pampered go to one of the places I mentioned above.

We drive over to the other coast for surfing. For anything else our West Coast beaches are far superior.

I am from the daytona beach area. I would recomend it being you can drive on the beach (assuming your driving) along with your 45 min from st augustine (amazing city to check out), 1hr from orlando (theme parks and TONS of clubs), 3hrs from tampa which has more theme parks. Basically you'll get a little of everything.

o, and if your a nascar fan, daytona has the track.

PSA: There is NO OIL here.

There was never much to begin with. DO NOT believe everything the media feeds you.

    To the OP...

Check out Destin...Santa Rosa Beach and Panama City Beach.

Awesome beaches...plenty of laid back places...night life...southern girls...

What more could a guy ask for?

Stay away from Panama city beach aka the Redneck Riviera. Unless you're cool with white trash and high schoolers everywhere. Destin is nice though.

The Panama City Beach comment is just plain incorrect.

Its my opinion of the place. I have been there and do not care for it at all. Its way too commercialized with high rise condos everywhere and its where all the rednecks go on vacation. I walk around wal-mart here in GA and all I see is PCB and myrtle beach T-shirts.

I hear that the apalachicola area is really nice.

OK...I'll agree with the commercialized part. As is almost every nice beach area.

Even Destin has got that way over the past 5-10 years. I've been here (Destin & Santa Rosa Beach) for 20 years...wife and her family since 1980...so I've seen the condo pirates at work.

Apalach is a nice laid back town...not much for beaches though. Cape San Blas and Port St. Joe and Mexico Beach all are nice as well. Good fishing there too.

I love this coast...and I have traveled all over the state. Even lived on Marco Island for a while. It's all good...but this area is home to me.

Now...if I hit the Lotto...or had a rich uncle die and leave me mucho coins...I'd love a place in the Keys. Cudjoe Key or any of the lower Keys are sweeeet.

I've been there many times. Once for a 2 week stay at a waterfront house with a dock on Cudjoe Bay. Pulled my little Mako 17 boat down...fished and drank and screwed like the world was gonna end.

In other words...we partied like it was 1999. LOL.

The FL Keys are a special and magical place.
