Vacuum pump for about 45 min should do it and you can also check for leaks with it .Thats if you are recharging like in an empty system. I only have a cheap harbor freight one but its done the job many times along with their AC Manifold Gauge set.

Pretty close. But don’t turn on the system on empty. You have to put as much as it takes (but less than full charge) through high side. A little bit through low side. Then, if it didn’t take all charge you do it while it’s running. Having a scale to weight it in is the ideal method.

agreed on an older vehicle this would be sound advice....however based on the assumptiom he does not knownmuch about AC I decided to tell him to play it safe and let the AC system pressure switch do the thinking for him....if he starts the truck and starts to fill from the low side the pressure switch will do the work for him assuming the pressure switch is properly working. (Yes, IF the pressure switch is not working it could damage the system) however givin the history of our trucks its likely his compressor needs to be replaced and the switch is fine.

No its true true....thats why you need to put a vaccum on the system. If its only a tiny bit of mostiure than the dessecant pack will likely take care of it, but its best to put a good vaccum on the system to remove moisture and check for leaks.

To begin with that is to" add" 134a like in "topping off" a system , you asked to recharge which makes it sound to me as if the system is empty, like maybe you replaced a part or two. Second you will be hard pressed to find an experienced AC person to recommend 134a with a sealant in it unless they are selling the stuff.

Does anyone know if I were to just swap out compressors with a new one if this works, and if I would have to add oil or drain oil out of the new compressor?
The old compressor in the truck stopped working for about a year and then the belt screeched one day when I turned on the ac, so I pulled the fuse, I assume the thing is seized and needs replacing. Would I be best to just swap it out then go to an ac shop?
