I just did my oil change on my 2016 Mazda CX-5 today (at 32k miles) which takes 4.8 quarts and when I poured the old oil into my empty 5 quart jug, It only went to 3.5 quarts. The last oil change I got was at the Mazda Dealership and was in April 2018 and I went about 8500 miles since then. My car is not leaking oil anywhere. I figured it had to be the tech just didnt put enough in. I called the dealership and they said it shouldnt be a problem as long as it runs ok. I did find some metal flakes/shaving in the oil. What should I do now? Should I be worried if I ran it for a year and 8500 miles with 1 quart less than normal amount?

So you consumed 1.3 qt in a year/8500 miles, right? Well, actually there is residual oil in the engine (it's not dry) and in the filter. (You did change that too, right?) so you 'may' be down a qt.

If you checked the oil even once a month, either...........

    1) You'd have found the issue in 1 month, if it was truly under filled (always check immediately after someone else does it, just like you do when you do it)

    or

    2) You'd have topped up with small increments if it was/is consuming oil.

Being 1 qt low isn't gonna be an issue on it's own.

You can send a sample to Blackstone and get the real skinny on the oil / engine health if you're not going to sleep at night.

And please. Check your oil more than at change time.

BTW, while I'm not a dealership fan in most cases, you have zero evidence (based on info you've given) that the dealership did anything wrong.

Yea i changed the filter too. And drained the old one. I agree about there still being some in the engine and filter, so 1 quart low is most likely.
I totally agree with you about checking your oil more, and for sure after someone else changes it for you (never again!).
