I tried his movies, just not my thing. I have a new one to try now. It sounds pretty good.

 

Sorry, I got a little...er...vehement about it.
No offense, honestly.

Let me be a little more specific:

1) John Ford was a legendary director, and many think The Searchers was his best work.

2) VistaVision was developed in the early '50s as a response to the popularity of TV.
It's legit high resolution, widescreen, and was a very expensive process. Especially for then.
I'm no expert, but I wonder if the quality can be replicated digitally, even now.

3) The depth of field is incredible, which is appropriate for Monument Valley.
Everything is in sharp focus (or very close to it), characters in foreground and background as well.
Which is in keeping with the setting.
The sense of wide spaces is powerful, sometimes overwhelming.

4) You'll never find a stronger supporting cast. Ward Bond, Jeffrey Hunter, Natalie Wood, to name a few.

5) Okay, John Wayne.
He became an icon and icons eventually get caricatured.
This is his best work though.
Here he's an odd mixture of an anti-hero, relentlessly seeking revenge...
And courageous loyal friend.
But never one dimensional. He's more than that in every scene. There are inner demons driving him.
He's utterly believable in this role.

6) The script and the way Ford directed it.
It's kind of an odd mixture here.
It's by turns very grim and serious, and then the tension is relieved by very human interactions..
There are some very funny moments as well, principally involving the supporting actors.

 

You sold me at Natalie Wood. I'm in.

 

Anyway, that's what I think about that.

Oh, I hate musicals such as a Wizard of Oz and shit. Only Musical worth watching, well a must watch is Blues Brothers.

I don't think Blues Brothers should be lumped in with shitty 'ol musicals. Blues Brothers is more than that.
