Okay, I’m new to the truck world.. historically a German sports car guy.. but bought a TRD sport to deal with long commute in industrial zones of Houston.

I find it odd that the engine is exposed at the wheel well and there are rusted parts already..2 days old!!!

Is this normal?? I’m not sure how off-road folks are not concern of dirt/rocks getting into there, or long term water exposure causing corrosion. Do you apply any lubricants regularly??

That's an exhaust manifold, it is subject to extreme heat. It will rust.

Surface rust on the strut pin and header plate. It is gonna happen. You could coat the strut pin in grease or spray oil, or paint.

The header is gonna do this unless you want to coat them in ceramic or something. The headers heat and cool which changes the metal composition and thus rust. They are not the highest mix or as out there,

I would not worry too much, wd-40, pb blaster, fluid film, tire shine........all work well for a short time to ward of corrosion. Constant battle sir.

This is mine after 10 years. I don’t know how much rust they have. most of what you see is the headers with baked on red mud.

Because of our crappy winter's here, I have my Taco rustproofed yearly. Frame and all.......

As far as the skirts exposing a lot of engine bay, I believe someone sold bigger skirts that covered more area around the wheel well. I don't have a link though!

I don't want to be yet another "it's normal" guy but I will be. I come from German sports cars too and the contrast between this engine bay and a BMW's is jarring. The BMW is all clean and covered in a plastic shield and everything looks great (right up until your HPFP explodes, but that's a story for a different forum) and the Tacoma is just hanging out getting all dusty and dirty. Different strokes for different folks. :)

Brother, you’ll have a lot of money left over to get your Taco exhaust ceramic dipped.

    Just saying.....

I came from a bmw as well. All that plastic shielding is amazing at hiding all the oil leaking from those fancy German motors. There’s a reason they all get traded in right when the factory warranty runs out. Good cars but keeping up with them maintenance wise is a losing battle.
