    Hey,

I am looking at buying a 2016 l4 SR5 Tacoma from a fella, it has the very basic head unit.

Is it possible to upgrade the head unit to have maps/navigation? Thats about the only thing I feel the truck is missing.

    Thanks!

Yes, either go with a stock entune plus take off (not recommended), go aftermarket with NAV($$$) or go aftermarket with Carplay/Android/Waze.

Yep, everyone wants too much for stock, aftermarket is soo much better.

Good to know. So I shouldn't let the basic HU discourage me from buying the truck.

Mine constantly bugs out, will shut off by itself, routinely stops playing music or disconnects the Bluetooth. Sometimes it resets by itself too and brings the start up screen back for a few seconds. What really irks me though is how if you have Bluetooth connected it works fine for a while and then you shut off the truck and turn it back on and suddenly that Bluetooth connection won't come back

See if you can bring him down in price a little to give yourself more money for an aftermarket head unit

Stock NAV is ok. Stock puts out maybe 10W a channel, maybe. Aftermarket opens up a bunch of options. Mine is a Kenwood, has Waze and Carplay, so 2 NAV apps. I did a bunch of other sound work, but would recommend everyone do the HU first instead of the speakers, like everyone does. The stock headunit has terrible sound attenuation and processing. Just changing the head unit will make everything sound better. Aside from that you could get it all done for the price most people are asking for their used stock units. Getting a brand new stock unit is a waste of money, 1k+.

4 cylinder - I am okay with that since this is going to be used to commute around the city to different job sites.

Do some homework on aftermarket units... make sure you’re getting the capability you desire. Check into all “requirements”, such as antenna’s and wire harness modification’s you’ll need. Good resource for such information is https://www.crutchfield.com/ - lots of answers there.

Also, the factory head units are not a value purchase for your situation. Since you’re buying used, and will likely keep the vehicle for a few years, you won’t really lose any $$ as a result of moving away from stock. Finally, put the factory HU up for sale, and recover some money for the new HU. Good luck with your “new to you” truck...
