I have an 88 Toyota pickup that is limping along right now. It will drive under 10 mph but any more pressure on the gas pedal and it will go unresponsive and sputter out. I recently swapped out the original engine for a 22re. Does the ecu need to match the truck or the engine?

    Sure.

A particular ECU 'might' serve multiple years if they have the same engine.

Looking up the P/N for the original vehicle and the donor vehicle might help you figure that out.
