Amen to that! The dipstick on my riding mower is ten times easier to read.

I just do 5 qts and don't worry about it. The area between the top/bottom marks on the stick is called the "safe zone " for a reason

You use your wrist for jerking off, so why not do something useful with it and pour another 1/2 quart into your truck

^^^ This. Also I find with a Fumoto that there is a little more residual that either doesn't come out or that I'm either too impatient to wait for given the slightly slower drain vs the stock plug.

My old first gen with a 2.7L 4cyl took the same 5.5qts as the 4.0L does. Seems odd to me as well.

    Always 5.2L. A full 5L jug and a 1L jug for the last 200mL.

Edit: Didn’t vote in poll because no metric? :notsure:

Back when times were simple, I bought 2 jugs of 5w30. Tacoma got 5.5, and Corolla got 4.5. No leftovers, so easy. Always changed both at the same time.

Now it's 5.5 in the Taco, and about 5 quarts 0w20 in the Camry...

My Taco doesn't burn any oil, but I'd still be paranoid just dumping a 5 quart jug in and calling it good. Inclines, corners, declines, ect. Sometimes a 5 quart jug is a little shy of 5 quarts too.

I’m in Canada so I use a single 5L jug (5.28 quarts) every change. 5.5 quarts seems a little high on my V6.

    Same as everybody else...
I use the 5 QT jug and then check the oil level the following day. If its low I top it off, sometimes even with just the jug it's close to max.

It depends on how long I let the old oil drain for. I start draining the oil. Then, start doing the other maintance items. Lube the driveshaft, inspected the undercarriage, check and top off the other fluids, clean the head lights, replace the old oil filter, and anything else that needs done. Then, put the drain plug back in and fill with the 5.2L or roughy 5.5q of oil. If my list is short and nobody interrupts me, then right at the 5.2L/5.5q mark. If it drains a while longer, then slightly more. Bearly enough to really notice. Either way I fill to the line. Of corse, I have stared the truck and let it run, then set to allow the oil to drain down.

5.5 quarts. The remaining 1/2 quart or so gets used the next oil change as a small flush before filling.
So, I guess I use 6 quarts, 5.5 to fill and .5 to flush.

The one oil change I've done myself since buying the truck it ended up being closer to 6 than 5.5. Like others have said the dipstick is no help as it seems to dislike giving a clear reading. The truck burned/leaked about .5qts in 5500 miles so I feel its within a safe margin of error.

I'd rather have slightly more than recommended as opposed to slightly less if I learned anything from the VW 1.8t scene.

I've always added the extra 1/2 qt. Never thought about just stopping at 5 qt's and letting the truck be 1/2 qt low. But it won't hurt a thing. If it gets down to 1 full qt low then you could add it then. But either way you're going to need to buy another bottle of oil eventually.

Manual says 5.5qts. So that's what I add.

Dip stick usually reads somewhere in the middle.

I also change my oil while the motor is warm so it all comes out better.
