The Alabama Hills are just outside Lone Pine off the 395 between the highway and the mountain range. The south entrance is off the road to Whitney Portal Rd. It was a popular location for some Hollywood films way back when. Pretty crowded theses days if you want to camp. But it’s a nice mellow drive (a civic can do the main road), but if you keep going north on (I shit you not it’s called this) Movie Road you can get to some other dirt roads that will take you to less crowded areas.

My brother lives in Big Pine so I usually leave to go up there around 4 am. I like to cruise the hills around 8:30 am ish as there’s no rush once I’m out there. Plus my daughter likes climbing the rocks. It’s a legit spot but what you don’t see in all the photos are the people camping like in plain site off the Movie road. Still everyone should see it for how simple it is to get to.

Sadly it’s not a very close trip for you from Slo. Gotta go through Bakersfield most likely unless you want to take smaller roads which may or may not be open.

I love it! Spent a lot of time exploring on my motorcycle in that area. Also love highway 20...

Behind Lone Pine, just off of the 395. Easy drive. If you take the dirt roads that lead to the base of the mountains you can find spots like the one I posted, no crowds , no big RV's. The main road-Movie Road- has most of the campers camped along the sides of it. Even when busy, the area is a neat place to see. No challenging off-road stuff, just cool scenery, especially now with the snow capped mountains!

I know those places very well.
I'm from "Province de Namur", but left Belgium since 1980 for work.
    Thank you
