In 20 years, will our 3rd gens be as beloved as 1st gens are today?

I don't think so. I wonder the same for 2nd gens. The more electronic crap that gets added to new vehicles the less likely they survive in the long run. It will take some MAJOR aftermarket support to keep them around like the classics (think LMC truck for all old trucks).

I think of my 1970 Blazer. It's about to turn 50 and beyond the body it is a "new" vehicle. Putting in a newer engine and fuel injecting it was no problem at all.

Could I drop a 3rd gen engine in my 2nd gen and have the whole truck work and all the computers communicate? Maybe, I believe anything is possible as far as vehicle mods. However, doing modern swaps to older vehicles like my K5 is infinitely simpler.

30 years in trades (started part time in high school). Paid off my mortgage 3 years ago. 46 years old. Raised three children with a stay-at-home mom. Bought my Tacoma with cash. Got a discount on life insurance for being above average health for my age (from not sitting at a desk), and just made 40 hours pay working 20 hours this weekend at double-time.

Guess trades sucks.

I have to disagree. If I am correct right now, in 2019, you can buy all the parts including a whole cab assembly for a '69 camaro BRAND NEW.

In 50 years will I be able to build a entire gen 1 taco brand new? Will there be that much aftermarket demand? I am doubtful.

Don't get me wrong, I love the taco, but I don't think they'll be on the road as long as the older stuff. Not so much because the old cars are better, it's that they readily adapt to everything. You could drop the same engine as a '19 camaro into a '69 way easier than doing the reverse.

 

Guess thats one thing we can agree on. Some people in here damn sure have no clue what theyre talking about. The pay Im being told to expect upon graduation from a 2 year Automation program is a lot higher than some 4 year degrees.

 

Of my peer group, I’m the top earner, from what I observe, and the only one without a university education. I’m also the first to pay off my home, and the only one to do it on one income.

I also don’t hate my job like many of them do. Never in the same place for more than a few days, never working for the same client more than a few days, never working with the same crew more than a few days. Anything that sucks is only temporary.

Colleges and universities are businesses first and foremost. They are places of higher learning second. They’ll turn out 5000 political science graduates to compete for three positions. As long as the tuition is paid.....who cares after that.

Since technology is changing so fast, I'm sure our 3rd gens will be thought of as basic. I guarantee there will be people restoring them one day just they same way I see older guys with their 05 Corvette they always wanted.

OP, nostalgia is an odd thing. Young people are driving less than previous generations, and I want to say that driving may not feel as freeing as it once did?

Damn it. I should have done this. Figured it out after several years out of college. Hate desk job so much.

Electrician is far better than being a plumber unless you only do new construction. Lots of people only need a plumber when everything has already gone to shit, literally.

 

There are many careers under the one umbrella, with the one electrical ticket.

I started in industrial/commercial construction, then I was an audio technician for several years (also using my electrical ticket), the I moved cities and went into high voltage power generation, and lately I mainly work on ships. My father was also an electrician, but spent the majority of his years as an automation programmer, also using his electrical ticket.

I would recommend any young person reading this to seriously consider a trade. I’m coming across as a braggart I’m sure, but I hope that the word might get out to someone who isn’t as lucky as I was to have a father who was a tradesperson. Its not promoted enough to young people as a viable choice, with so much bullshit media steering people to take on massive debt for a college degree that is possibly worthless to earn a living. Trades isn’t a free ride, but the opportunities for hard work or smart work to be turned directly into cash are boundless.

 

It was freeing for me at 25.9 cents per gallon. Filled up my Pontiac Grand Prix for a $5 bill.

 

Agree with all of this. My generation was taught to look down on the trades. Those were the 'dumb kids.' Us smart kids had to go to college and get fancy desk jobs in gray, dreary offices.

I finally figured out I would have rather done manual labor after watching lots of old HGTV when they used to actually show the detail of building and repairing homes. Probably be way ahead of where I am now.

 

I know people who have changed career paths later in life. I’ve worked with quite a few “40 year old apprentices” over the years. A few of them stuck with it and now are full fledged.. It is harder to do for sure, but could also give you a new lease on life.
