I4 or V6 which one?

I'm shopping for a Tacoma and have come across some good deals on 2WD and 4WD access cabs and double cabs, I would like some opinions on the 4cyl mostly. Will I regret not going with the V6? The most I would pull is probably 2 Dirt bikes on a trailer. I'm not out to pass everybody but it does need to get out of it's own way. If I go double cab should I definitely go V6? Are the prerunners useless in the snow? Figured I'd ask people who have them and not a salesmen. Thank you

 

I4 if you can find a manual 4x4. It will carry you well into the fuel wars after Armageddon.

 

V6 Double-Cab Long Bed.

 

This is also a good choice, it’s long enough that you can land an F-14 on it.

 

The V6 makes roughly twice the power, and they get similar mileage. To me the V6 is a no-brainer unless you just want to save money on sticker.

Agreed. No offense to anyone with a DCLB, but the dimensions of the Tacoma just don't lend themselves to it. It looks like a damn school bus.

 

V6 double cab short bed is my vote. You'll have everything you need and wont long anything later on down the road thinking, "I wished I would've x"

 

My 4 cylinder days are over and I wish they put a small V8 in a Tacoma .

 

If I had to redo:

I4 manual 4x4 plus supercharger or
V6 auto 4x2 plus gearing

 

Agreed. I wish I had gone with a DCSB. I mean, IMO, the AC looks the best, but I really wish I had practical back seats.

 

Investigate before you invest. Test drive, test drive, and test drive. Best wishes on your new ride. I’m sure you’ll like which ever model you choose.

Only you can decide. Everything else is opinion. And considering the opinons of strangers on the internet for a $35k purchase should only be a blip on the consideration continuum.

But there are lots of folks who show up here complaining about lots of things that test drives and observations would have answered in advance.

Also, we don't know where you live, what kind of snow you have (or local treatments for snow), etc etc. People drove successfully in snow for decades with 2wd, and still do. While 4wd can matter a lot in getting you going, so do tires. A lot.

And keep in mind that 4wd is 'drive', not 'stop'. Only the tires will help there.

 

I have the I4... around town it is totally fine.. on the highway it is totally fine. Where is sucks is when you use the radar cruise control at 75mph but are going 65mph with traffic and then the slow poke gets out of the way. At that point it double down shifts and races to get back to speed and engine sounds like it is laboring and is so loud. (it goes up to 4800 rpm). That annoy me but other then that I am fine with the I4. I was 24K out the door (plus tax) so cant complain about that. To make up for the core missing features in the SR I added remote start, a nice radio, auto enable headlights and intermittent wipers, I also have a set of fog light and leather set covers to go in. A basic V6 was a good 7K more and I spent about $1,000 in feature upgrades ($1500 with the seats) so I felt I am enough ahead that it was worth it.

I got 4cyl Access Cab long bed auto trans and am happy. People with plenty of gas money who like pulling heavy loads on bad terrain will want the 6.

I am happy with less capability, since 156 horses is plenty for me. Here's a helpful meme to muddy the waters:

 

Buy whatever you want as long as it has a manual transmission

 

Test drive both, pick which one suits your needs, area you live in, and driving style the best.
