2005 Tacoma 4 cylinders wont start

Hello All,

my 2005 Tacoma just died and wont start again. it cranks but does not start. i got it to start for a second but then it shuts right back. I can hear the fuel pump run when i turn on the switch. not sure of the crankshaft position sensor is bad because I'm not getting an error message on my diagnostic computer tool. Battery is almost new and fully charged.

Any advice on what to look for?

 

Check spark, check air, check fuel. Sounds like the fuel pump is pumping. Pull your spark plugs, check your MAF, fuses, etc.

 

Inline four engine is easy to check, pulls all four coils and spark plugs, hook up a fully charged jump box and have someone crank the engine, you should faintly smell gas from the spark plug holes, if so you have gas. Now on to spark, since they are already off get a coil tester something like

this and connect the clamp to a good ground and the other end goes into the coil like a spark plug would, when cranking engine you should see a spark going across the gap, if so you have spark and can see how strong the coil is by making the gap larger, more voltage/amp to spark across a larger gap. I wouldnt worry about air yet since even if the MAF or throttle body had issues the engine should start, may run like shit but it should start. If you are at that point and nothing bad then I would check if there are any codes, you said the CEL wasnt on but maybe a code is pending. A little more intrusive would be a compression test, hey you already got the spark plugs out so that makes it easier, do 1 cylinder at a time with the compression tester and compare what the end PSI for each cylinder is, have the engine cranked the same amount of times for each cylinder.

 

It had a head gasket. Does anyone know if a v6 radiator will fit in? im thinking to upgrade the radiator so it wont overheat again. What doe you guys think?
