I know this is a Tacoma forum. I also know you guys are, for the most part, knowledgeable and some of you also have tundras. I've posted this on tundras.com but have a few mixed ideas and am really just trying to get my head in a realistic spot of what could be happening .

    So heres the story.

Picked up a 2010 tundra 5.7 with 61k on it on March 29th. Awesome truck. Have loved every minute. Until today. I have yet to do research as I have a few mixed symptoms and dont know what to investigate.

Was driving home, guy was doing 55mph in the fast lane so I attempted to pass him in the #2 lane. Got up to 75 or so, and went to hit the brakes. Unresponsive. Realizing my distance between the car ahead of me was closing, I attempted to accelerate further and make another lane change and exit the freeway and slow down via lower gears and e'brake. No throttle response. Truck was dead at 75mph.
Flashers on, manually hitting the brakes and I muscled it off the fwy onto the shoulder. Tried to restart the truck and was met with a lovely clack clack clack. I've windowed one block before on a 22re and it sounded identical. Called AAA and said screw it. Tried to restart just so I could try and hear it better, truck would crank and stutter as it attempted to fire, but seemed everytime it got into stride, it would clack clack clack again. I stopped. I couldnt safely get out and check much, but from what I could tell, no oil on the ground or pan, block was intact. Just dead.

I did notice the a/t oil pressure and engine oil pressure and check engine light on as i pulled over.

So where should I start. Its sitting at Longo Toyota for a diagnosis later but i want to be prepared for reality.

Edit.. I would start at the battery. Make sure you have a good contact on positive and negative. Good ground connection on the truck.

Youre the second person to say that and I dont know if you're kidding. Clack clack clack clack. Motor turns over fine but does.not fire or struggle to turn. There is obvious metal sounds coming from the engine when it starts to catch.

Ok. Wasnt sure if it was turning over or not. So not kidding just didnt see that info.
Could be the lifters or or a bad rod or piston hitting the head.

Lol no worries just funny that you're the second person to say it. I'm already thinking worst case....

spun the rod bearing, connecting rod snapped on the up stroke and mated the piston to the head. Instantly shut down engine (hence no vacuum or component power so all components failed to operate)

Best case scenario is a fuel pump. I've done a handful of them.

They also have air pump failures which puts the truck into limp mode and sometime stalls.

Hope for the best, and no major failures.

I am in no way an expert on Tundras but back when my dad was looking for his I remember his firefighting buddy mentioning the exact same situation with his Tundra

I believe they said it was related to the rod bearing in the end actually, so maybe this problem is more common that it seems

I'm sure that wasn't helpful but good luck, hope you get it fixed soon man

So picked up the truck. Runs fine. Bad pump and bad sending unit. Service tech couldnt get any replication of what I heard. Now I'm second guessing myself and wonder if it was something else completely unrelated.

Regardless big props to Longo Toyota for not only getting it done in one day but helping me out with the price. Wanted to charge $984 for everything and 5.5hrs of labor, knocked it down to 2.5hrs as a good faith move. This is my 6th Toyota and 5th Toyota truck and the first issue I've ever had with any Toyota vehicle.
