Blown Head Gasket

I’m gonna guess the dealer won’t replace the head studs and it’ll happen again in another 40k miles.

 

Reminds me of when I blew that tranny on the freeway.

Were there any symptoms prior to going in for the 40K service ?
Rough idle, plume of coolant smoke, low coolant levels ?
Both heads ? Just one ?
I am leery of any dealers diagnostics when they get paid directly from Toyota for this work. Just sayin.
I would not let them touch my engine unless I had proof there was this issue.
Common problem ? Hardly.

They probably noticed it on the way back from lunch after power-braking in front of McDonald's.

I have a good friend that his 2016 TRD OR had a HG failure around 10k miles. The Toyota dealer was perplexed, saying they haven't seen one yet. Now that he's traded the truck off, he told me he was pulling a 7k pound trailer for 200 hard miles when he noticed it dropping coolant externally.

OP, as others have asked for, Id like to hear more about the way your truck was running prior to taking it in.
Sounds like you have a decent dealer service dept.

 

My service writer at the dealer is an idiot, actually there was a leak with the timing cover

Doesn't surprise me one bit, these writers should have tech experience as a mandatory requirement for the job.
