I’m doing 5.29s soon. Mat is working on optimizing the tune for gearing and tires as well.
The top speed is currently limited to 80-something with 5.29s.

Sure! It is worth a try.
Just download in flash manager, then flash your truck.
I sure do like it! (I'm stock too)
Be sure to run a tank of 91 first. (Don't want any lower octane in your tank)

I have both, 4.88s and the tune. I'm also heavy, lifted and running 33s. You might want do some research on going 5.29s I believe some report problems at hwy speeds. I could have lived with just the 4.88s and been happy but what has bothered me more than anything was the drivability issues with this truck. I use the truck offroad a lot and usually have to drive long distances on a hwy to get there. I also pull a RV so I need the ability to drive several different terrains. I could care less about the added horsepower and torque I needed to make the truck drive better. OVTUNE has done that for me, gearlock helped a lot while pulling in the mountains, it's improved my mpg and has improved the annoying shifting on the hwy. Is it perfect no but it's to a point that I can live with and hope future updates will improve it even more. I wish as an off road enthusiast that the gear lock had been added to the base tunes. The tip in on the performance tunes make it impossible to use offroad, it just to aggressive it just increases the chance of breaking something. Throttle control is just not there. I currently use either the 87 or 91 base, I'm currently waiting for the 4.88 and 33 inch tire tune. Hope this helps, I highly recommend 4.88s if you go with bigger tires it was the best upgrade money I have spent. Nothing makes a truck suck more than not being geared right.

I read something about that a couple months back from here - https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a26027060/2021-toyota-tundra-pickup-future-spied/

Powertrain: The current Tundra is available with either a 4.6- or 5.7-liter V-8, both mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Rumors persist that Toyota is working on a truck-specific twin-turbo V-6, possibly based on the 3.5-liter unit in the current Lexus LS500.

So 5.29 on 33s would be too aggressive? i wont be towing or at least not in the near future but i will have have front and rear bumpers with a rtt and extra weight. Im running the OV tune but have to reflash the ECU and may go with the 91 base this go around...

Ran 1.05 87 Perf for 325 miles, tip in settled down some, adjusted driving habits some, ran good.

Flashed 87 Base, ran 317 miles, gets up and goes like when I had the 1.04 91 oct/93 gas.
In Houston traffic I don’t even need ECT. Truck accelerates better than the 1.04 91 tune with 93 gas.
Cruise control perfect, got rid of that gear searching thing when going uphill....now it’s super smooth.
Can’t say it’s changed my mpg.....it’s about the same 16 mpg.
87 Base runs great, plenty of acceleration!

So more time/miles on 87 Base. By far runs better linear shifting, the smoothest compared to the others I tried. Has a sensitive, reactive gas pedal though not the too strong tip in like on the 87 and 91 performance tunes.
Tried 91 Base tune and was flatter performance wise and shifted not as smooth as 87 Base.

Also on 87 Base gained about +2 mpg running 93 octane. Ran 87 octane before can’t tell a big difference performance wise. 93 octane here at Sam’s/Costco $2.76, 87 octane $2.45, 31 cents delta.
On 87 Base, 87 octane was averaging 16.1 mpg. 93 octane 18.6. Being conservative by saying 2 mpg increase.

At least on my truck with bigger wheels/tires and cap, pedal is more sensitive, better acceleration with smooth linear shifting than the other tunes I tried.
For sure try 87 Base tune first!

I’m willing to bet that Toyota came to him and asked for assistance to tune it. Toyota definitely knows about OVTune, mat said they have eyes on this thread even

33s and 4.88s will give you about 2050 to 2200 rpms at 70 to 75 mph. My mpg starts to drop at anything above 70. My truck loves about 50 to 60 mph and around town driving. When I hit the road for a trip I weigh about 5800 to 6000 lbs and average about 17-18 mpg. My speedo is about 8% off after tires and gears. I also have skinny BFGs KM2s so I'm not fighting as much weight as some other trucks. Personally I was afraid that the 5.29s would start losing mpg at 60 instead of 70 if I went with them.52021758_1203725836459206_6805373716030465440_n.jpg

I think you need to read more about the proper tire-gear ratios. Not sure why you need 5.29 for a 33....

Which means I won't be buying one until at least 2025. No more first 2 yr buys on a new Toyota design. My 2017 built exactly 1 year after production started was half-assed in assembly and the first year of ownership in identifying and fixing all of the factory issues almost turned me away. I finally got it all worked out but I sincerely hope I never buy a new vehicle with as many problems (leaky diff, whine, warped drums, misaligned bumper/hood/bed, fuel pump, blower motor, multiple ECU calibrations, CPS failure, etc.,)

I'm EXCITED for this next gen, but won't be buying another Toyota product that hasn't been in the market for at least 2 years - exception may be if they moved Tacoma production to Japan where perhaps there is better QC... :)

I feel the same way after my experience with the 2016. Sold it. Bought a Ranger. I will look at Tacoma again in 2024 after a couple of years. of street time.

No Toyota Tacoma should NEED a tune for an increase in poor performance.
