No need to get mad. Shit happens but: This a thousand times over. I wouldn’t want it back. Make them buy it at fair market value.

Didn't read all 20 pages yet either but my first reaction would be to tell them do not touch the truck any further and either get a lawyer or at least make a claim to get my insurance involved to total it. The only way I'd have them repair it is if they bought it back and want to resell it.

Honestly I admire OP's positive attitude and candor. It's a super crappy situation to be in. It's good to keep in mind that no one got hurt and end of the day it's just a truck. I think in the heat of the moment I wouldn't know what to do. I feel like the dealership went with the typical human reaction of "oh shit..we'll fix it..good as new" and it's hard to disagree with that when you are still processing what is happening. I know a lot of people are saying shit happens but I don't know, this to me wouldn't be the same as dinging my door or scratching my dashboard or something that I would consider "shit happens" - a purely cosmetic repair is entirely different IMO.

Everyone is mentioning an extended warranty... I'm not sure that an extended warranty is going to cover future problems from a truck being dropped. I thought the extended warranty will only cover manufacturer defects not anything that comes up wrong with the truck. I also don't think the warranty would care whether or not the dealership admitted to causing damage. Those warranties exist to make money, not help us, so I'd be very hesitant to trust that as compensation.

I know I would want compensation towards a new truck and unfortunately we're in a world where I'd have to pay a lawyer to assist because no matter how they work it out, a title will have to exchange hands and compensation would have to process through and I wouldn't feel comfortable heading up that endeavour. Seems like insurance would probably need to be involved as well.

Sounds like a good time to have them buy the truck, because I would not want that back fixed or not, warranty or not. Wait until you’re 6 months down the road and everything is working right and you’re SOL. I’d just suggest they buy it and get you a new truck at an amazing price. This would be something they can easily do and it would also help them “coverup” the cost of the incident on those books. Buy it from you a little high and sell you a new truck at cost and they didn’t really loose all that much. You walk away with a new truck and they end up with the problem they created.

Trade it in & make them sell you a new one at their Cost! They will still get paid from Toyota for selling it.

When they show you the invoice tell them you want to see the real one! Not the inflated one they show people!

This is precisely the way I would feel. I would be angling to have the dealership buy this at the price they would sell a similar (non dropped off the lift) truck on their lot.

I wouldn’t ever have confidence in the truck again, and I would worry that problems would show up after any extended warranty they gave was up.

I would have hit something, ......then when I get it back, straight to trade it in. If there is any value loss, they should pay and if they don't file a lawsuit.

heres my 2 cents. when I decided to sell my 2nd gen 06 AC, the going prices for these trucks used was WAY higher than the Kelley blue book or Nada guide prices. Like 4 grand. And about 6 grand higher than trade in prices. And I sold mine in 1 day to the first guy that came out, and had others on the phone willing to buy it sight unseen at that higher price. In my region. So if you do trade it to them, dont let them convince you it is worth blah blah, when it really may be worth a lot more than you think.

I second that, people are selling these for boat loads of money. And people are paying it!

Don’t forget to mention your time. Your time has value. So I’d try and count up all the hours you’ve allocated to getting this fixed. It’s a huge inconvenience and there should be a penalty for that.

PSA - I was curious about this, but in hindsight don't google cars falling off lifts. There's some pretty disturbing videos.

Well the Toyota ads do say the virtually indestructible Tacoma and Tundra trucks! Seriously though, having been a auto tech for 40 years I have never had a vehicle fall off a lift. I would be quite shaken to experience that.
