Would you recommend taking a stock trd-off road up the back way to crown king? Many of the reviews of the trail say not to take a stock vehicle up it, but the Tacoma is a beast off the showroom floor.

In all seriousness, my main hesitation is damaging the body since I don’t have sliders. I will be going with two lifted wrangles.

So what do you say to a friend thinking to trying this trail?

I have a 3 inch lift, 33 inch KM3s, steel sliders, bumpers and skids. A handful of months back there was a potion of the trail towards the end where almost every vehicle was turning around due to a large step. It took two attempts to get up it for me, and I still came down on my slider. Long wheelbase problems. If you stacked a lot of rocks, and picked a perfect line I am sure its possible. But I voted no. The trail changes a lot over time though So it could be different now.

It changes a lot. Could be graded smooth. Could be all jacked up due to water runoff. I’ve seen it both ways. If you’re worried about body damage, ride with someone else or get a recent report. I haven’t been up this year yet.

I did it like 2 weeks ago and there haven’t been any storms since then so I would imagine it’s in the same condition.

If you don’t have any lift at all, or even some aggressive tires... I think you can finish the trail but the worst part for you is going to be the sections that aren’t “technical” but rather just sections with a lot of small boulders on the trail. Lifted, on bigger tires you can roll over these but without any lift or tires you’ll just have to pick your lines carefully and go much slower than the jeeps. I think it’s probably worth going but you’re going to be stressed during many of the areas going super slow and possibly wanting a spotter. Lemme try to find some pics of what I’m talking about

The “REALLY” technical sections have bypasses. The only problems I’d foresee for you without a lift or better tires are just sections similar to these. I didn’t get a ton of pictures of what I’m referring to but there are a lot of just general “Rocky” sections that you’ll be going slow for and the jeeps will probably have to be patient.

My honest opinion having very recently done it in my 2.5” lifted tacoma on beefy MT’s with sliders and skids... it’s just going to take all day and likely be very slow and anxious for you. Those stock tires aren’t “awful” I actually wheeled on those Kevlar Goodyear’s for a while but it’s just going to be incredibly rocky and you’ll probably bang your factory skids quite a few times and you’ll also want to keep a close eye on the rockers since you don’t have sliders. It can be done but I’m sitting here recommending you 60/40 in favor of not taking your brand new $40k truck without a lift. That’s just my opinion. Especially since you’re going with wranglers. Don’t want you destroying your brand new truck.

We ran it yesterday taking an alternate route dropping in the CK road right before Orobelle. We had a stock 14’ TRD OR on 265’s. He took on rocker damage on the obstacle after the waterfall. He’s now unable to open the driver side back access cab door. His spotter told him to try rolling thru where I wanted to stack a rock in front of his back tires which we eventually had to do to get him up. 80154FD4-3193-4A48-B0EF-CEDE0941CD9C.jpg F58BE764-6F9D-4C9B-A9AA-D463A8E3C164.jpg 6205D1EE-4C9F-4368-92B0-5882E2ADBD94.jpg

I got through unscathed. The MGM Tacoma got the rocker damage, it wasn't pretty, I should of took a pic of it. The GMC Canyon dented his plastic front bumper and side steps. Everyone had a great time though.
