Weller Special Reserve is a wheated bourbon. Bourbon is already on the sweet side of whiskies and wheated is on the sweet side of bourbons. It's an inexpensive expression and the sacrifice is a little bit of sharpness up front and a short finish, but I think it is an admirable $20 wheater.

If I were recommending a wheated bourbon, it'd be Larceny.

For reference, Maker's Mark is also a wheated bourbon.

WSR is one of my favorites and is a good bargain for the price. Definitely worth a try.

It galled me to do this with good scotch, but the GF brought back some Laphroaig Coffee from her trip to the UK so...I had to try it with a splash of the real deal, too.

I may have twisted his arm in to that one as well .

    Quick backstory on Little Book.

Booker's is the namesake of the former master distiller for Jim Beam - Booker Noe. He passed away in 2004. His son, Fred Noe, took over as master distiller and has kept up with the production of Booker's bourbon. Fred's son (Booker Noe's grandson) is Freddie Noe. Freddie in the business, but not the master distiller (yet). Freddie has basically taken the keys to all of Jim Beam's warehouses and set out to make unique whiskies. He calls it "Little Book", obviously as a call-out to the footsteps that he is following in.

Where Booker's is a bourbon, Little Book is a blended whiskey. So far, only two releases ("Chapters" as he calls them) have come out and they couldn't be more different from one another. Chapter One: The Easy, is a blend of straight bourbon, straight rye, malt whiskey, and corn whiskey. It came out beautifully. It is like an exquisite version of High West Campfire (if you've had that), with a more subtle smokiness. Rye bite, bourbon/corn sweetness, and a malt whiskey smokiness and viscosity.

Chapter Two: Noe Simple Task, is a blend of an 8-year Kentucky straight rye, a 13-year Canadian rye, and a 40-year(!) Canadian rye. It is an incredibly unique whiskey. It comes off mostly as a Canadian rye, which is normally a bad thing to me, but creamy and balanced, unlike many Canadian ryes with their sharp bitterness. I don't *love* it, but I do think it is quite good and a hell of a lot of fun to drink because I don't have anything else in the cabinet to compare it to.

I really, really want Little Book to take off and be successful. Blended whiskies opens up a whole other world for whiskey expressions by not being bound to the strict rules of bourbon, rye, and scotch. The distillers/blenders need to be very transparent on their ingredients list for this to work (Little Book is). They don't have to give away their secrets, but we ought to know how much, if any, grain whiskey is used as a filler. Consumers need to let go of the stigma that all blends are inferior. Yes, lesser quality grain whiskey as a filler often leads to a cheap (and poor) product, but a blend of good whiskies results in a new product that has every bit of time, care, and expertise in it that a typical straight bourbon or single malt scotch would.
