How about 1st gear, maybe a second or two at the most and she is out of there. I was testing mine today driving like a human being and I have no complaints yet other then that 1st gear is hardly present

Weird I was saying the same thing about mine today, it is not perfect but it seems like it is shifting smoother. As mention maybe just getting used to the truck. I am trying to stay in regular mode and ease my foot off the gas a bit and now I am liking it.

It wasn't just the A/T either.

Early M/T calibration (04B10) was dismal IMO. Severe throttle weirdness (lots of lag, brought to you inconsistently), bog off the line, power delivery fuckery in the midrange just below the 3500 kick and very lacking low end. Oh, and stuttering at 1500-1800 under load. Yay.
Yes I test drove it and I bought it anyway, that's on me. I was unhappy with the drive, so I ponied up and did something about it. Now that I'm tuned and "sans-accumulator", the thing actually drives pretty damn good.
That's just my story, take it or leave it. Also, don't get your panties in a bunch - if you like YOUR truck, that's great.

Edit: Toyota "tried" with 04B13 (TSB update for 2016/2017 M/T, sorta), and I must say it's a pretty good calibration from them. Unfortunately it took them too long to release it. Well, if you could call what Toyota did with that file a release... more like a secret squirrel shitshow that hardly any dealer would try lol.

Towed my 14' Lund aluminum boat over the mountain pass this weekend.....no gas motor on it just electric trolling motor, battery and fishing gear. Me, my wife, dog and baby in the truck with just tent, camp chairs and clothing. Because the power is high in the RPM band on this truck and the truck always wants to be in a high gear, the first 30 minutes the the drive over the pass were non stop up down shifting. The next 45 minutes was followed by me putting the truck in sport shift and locking out 4th gear because all it would do is bog and shift down into 3rd. Got to listen to 45minutes of the truck screaming along at 4500rpm doing 50-55 while people blew by me doing 65.

So yeah that's fun every couple weekends.... For the most part the truck is "fine" but I dont see how anyone regularly tows anything with it or lives anywhere hilly with a high speed limit. I'm in Washington the truck is a PITA when you reach the mountains......this truck would be a nightmare somewhere like Wyoming where the speed limits on the highway are high and there are large rolling hills.

It's not gonna change on the highway, will steadily be above 3k rpm at all times. Even mostly flat ground. And then shift like it's schizophrenic. I got 8k miles on mine and is no real difference than before. TSB done etc. ECT makes trans hold gears longer but stays above 3k rpm with any load or incline as well. Then slams into gear when it shifts. You may get used to it, but it's all I notice everytime I drive this truck.

I must have gotten a bad one. It shifts fine. I have ten miles of bypass at about 75 then through the woods for ten miles then 3 miles of college town stop and go five days a week. Went from 16.5 to 19.5 in 4k. Pretty much the exact same driving pattern. I've had a 3.5 in my last 3 cars. The only thing I notice about this is the truck is 1000 lbs heavier and it's a lil slower. If I punch it, it spins the Goodyear's a bit and launches.

Give it some time? It gets better? After a few thousand miles? Such BS! The new vehicle car/truck should drive perfectly right off the dealer lot. Paying 40 K for a brand new vehicle and having to wait for it to get better is total crap. These trucks are an embarrassment for Toyota. What a shame to, Tacoma line was such a nice truck.

1st of April I could not stand the crazy shifting anymore after 8 months, new colorado diesel goes into 6th and stays there. I'm having regrets about trading the tacoma, such a beautiful truck with no guts. Back on toyota lot all last week, I don't know if the colorado will stay or not. If the toyota just would not shift crazy all the time it would of been great........just the best looking mid-size by far.

The truck drives fine. Its not underpowered. It doesnt have bad mpg. All the stuff im reading in this thread I just cant understand. Ive driven and owned small cars, fast cars, full size trucks and mid size. This is my favorite vehicle ive ever owned. I dont even experience the shifting issues.

You can always buy a Frontier. Nissan’s been building it since Ronald Reagan was in the White House. I’m sure it shifts as wonderfully as the 3-speed on a 1982 Nissan Sentra.

Just don't get the 05ish ones with the radiators with the manufacturing defect. Unless you like strawberry milkshakes in your cooling system.

That said, the Nissan with the 4.0l and 6 MT is a blast :)

I bought a 2005 Nissan Xterra, new, with the 4.0 and 5-speed automatic: the engine sounded so awful our Tacoma motors sound like a Ferrari by comparison. That 4.0 guzzled more gas than a V12; the suspension wallowed and leaned like it was made out of marshmallows; and the interior had the cheapest looking materials, poorest fit-and-finish this side of the Iron Curtain.

That Xterra made the Wranglers I owned for 10 years after that feel like luxury vehicles.

    Never. A. Nissan. Again.

Limited wheels, extra rope hooks in bed.
I recently bought a 20 ft. pontoon boat about 60 miles from my house. I'm guessing it weights less than 3,500 lbs. My V6 struggled to pull it more than 50 mph on flat ground without downshifting to 4th. It wanted to drag down to 30 mph or less if I didn't keep my foot on the accelerator hard. Constantly down shifting on flat ground if I wanted to keep up with traffic and not get ran over. Keeping it in S4 isn't really an option if you want to drive over 50 mph. I am thinking to myself, this thing is pathetic...I'm lucky it's 1 mile from my house to the boat ramp...

Ecu update will take care of cruise control situation, this should not still be happening. Bought a 16 and this was an issue. For towing ect, anything over 5000 lbs on the regular I would get a fullsuze

I bought my SR5 in FEB 2019. I've test driven it before and thought it was fine for what it is. A 3.5 6spd in a truck isn't gonna have the snappiness of a small or mid size sedan (my Camry 2.5L AT or Accord 3.0 V6 6spd manual). It's sluggish for sure compared to my Camry or Accord, but I've also test driven the Sierra 5.3L and F150 5.0 and I don't think the Tacoma is as bad as some people make it seem.

I don't even know if my truck doesn't have the gears hunting problem or that it has it and I just don't know how to tell. If I have $800 laying around then I'll try out the OVTune.
