SoCal was where I did most of my riding, 12 years there. SD County mostly, a couple trips to LA. SD urban was a PITA, SD county eastward was a blast.

Motor Officers on our Department receive Hazard Pay because their job is considered extremely dangerous and they believe it is only a matter of time until they are struck by a vehicle or forced to lay their bike down to avoid a collision.

Regardless of how safe you are on your motorcycle, riding a motorcycle near other vehicles greatly increases your chances of being involved in an accident. As a Supervisor, I was on loan to Traffic Division for one month. Traffic Supervisors do not have much responsibility when assigned to Traffic, but must respond to all traffic calls involving fatalities. During this month, I responded to four Supervisor Requests and all four were deaths that involved vehicles versus motorcycles. In all four incidents, the drivers of the vehicles (3 cars and 1 tractor trailer) were at fault and in all 4 incidents the drivers of the vehicles failed to yield right of way by turning left in front of the motorcyclists. The riders were struck so hard and so violently that they were knocked out of there boots that were thrown over 25 yards and still had the laces tied. The impact caused teeth to be removed from their mouth, roots and all, as if pulled out with pliers. Unfortunately, the only purpose the helmets served was to help identify the rider and helmets are commonly referred to as “brain buckets” as a result. The internal damage received is devastating and too much for most to withstand.

If you ride, or regardless of how you choose to “walk down the middle of the street”, I hope you are careful, minimize your risk, and “enjoy the ride”.

Left turners in front of you is the worst. I always tried to be aware of protected turn lanes vs unprotected. Unprotected intersection, I would go drastic, stand up on the pegs, swerve side to side in my lane trying to be visible.

LOL, no. Wasn't trying to show off, just trying to be visible to oncoming left-turners. I certainly didn't look cool standing up on the pegs as if my hemi's were giving me problems, I was just one scared dude about getting left turned.

The main issue with bikes is you are the crumple zone. Bad riding is on the rider but you can’t blame a bad driver from the grave. I don’t see a lot of defensive riding, mostly reckless shit that endangers everyone including said shit. This is not just a few bad apples, it’s a pervasive attitude of treating anything “not bike” as a stationary object to shave a corner from. Drives do it too, and it’s a big threat to riders. But that’s what humans do, anything or anyone not part of their intimate circle is just white noise.
