I have been looking into radios a lot recently but I don't have anybody I regularly wheel with to make it worth while. Do you have any recommendations for those who don't already have a set up? walkie talkies? If I remember correctly most walkie talkies wont get through to CB and most CB wont get through to HAM.

I'm coming from Escondido. If anyone is coming from North County let me know.

I have walkie talkies. Hopefully that works.

Most everyone I know uses HAM radios on amateur frequencies, the Baofeng is a popular one on Amazon and only ~$20

Will a regular walkie talkie be able to communicate with this radio or should I buy one?

It won't, HAM radios and walkie talkies use different kinds of frequencies.

I think HAM is good to have because it's even more popular than CB on the trails these days. I think I've only ever known a couple people that still use CB.

The only thing with HAM is that technically yes, you need a license to transmit on one. But if you look it up, in the history of the FCC the FCC has never once bothered to harass anyone using low frequency amateur channels without a license. They go after people illegally using high frequency channels that can only be accessed with high end, modified radios/equipment....something these little Baofengs will never be able to do.

Anyway just something I feel should be mentioned before someone else says it lol. I've been using mine regularly for years (and everyone else I wheel with) and never once had an FCC helicopter or van come out of the woods to take me down.

    Check My Sig.
It was to my understanding that you only needed a license to transmit within a certain broadband. 144.XXX-149.XXX or something like that. Most of us transmit on the well known Race channels for Baja or anywhere in the 151.XXX and up. Someone more knowledgeable can confirm though.

I used to think so too but did some more digging into it after getting into an argument over the issue with someone on TW once, lol.

This link sums it up pretty well...

    http://www.pineapplejuice.net/ham-pine/?page_id=50

There's no license required to purchase and listen to Amateur HAM radio frequencies, but you do need a license if you wish to transmit on HAM and even Amateur HAM radio frequencies.

I think the reason they do this is to keep people from buying and modifying HAM radios to listen to higher frequencies without a license. Anyhow no one is going to get busted by the FCC for transmitting on amateur channels, I don't think the FCC has even made a HAM radio related arrest in many years (there's a website where you can read about the arrests, and they're all high frequency related).

edit - I posted the wrong link, just edited it...the first one was to some webpage that looked like it was made in 1995

Anyway if someone is only comfortable bringing walkie talkies that's totally fine, I'm sure there are others that have walkie talkies they can bring too...as long as everyone is at least able to communicate with one other person that's better than nothing, and as long as the person in the back and the person in the front can communicate the group will be fine.

I'll be on one of those baofangs and a cb. I'm looking into a permanent build right now to install when I take my interior apart to sound deaden and insulate. But for that I will be getting my license to operate it. Unfortunately funds and time are not on my side before this trip.
