It's the best way to get to know your new vehicle. The ass clown that owned the Lightning before me decided to "black out" the headlights and did it completely wrong. Of course he didn't tell me about it. When it got dark out and I went to put on the lights on those lonely mid-western highways, I could see very little. My GF was freaking out the entire time and that part just sucked, but it was fun driving halfway across the country in 2.5 days. Did Ohio to Mass all in one day. Looking out those little rear side windows of the Porsche every time was one of my favorite parts of the ride home. I'm driving it today and the the shifts are so short compared to the Tacoma, I almost put my fist through the stereo, lol.

Haha. Yeah, I had a 7 speed 991 carrera a couple years ago. Your 996 turbo probably has a shorter throw than the 991, but I know exactly what you mean about the difference in throws to the Tacoma.

It also has the factory short throw kit to make those throws even shorter. I also almost yanked the parking brake out of the car too.

Sure, the OEM chrome collar is held on with a zip tie under the boot. I removed the center cupholder area plastic to get to that zip tie, cut it off and removed the chrome collar. I just took another zip tie and tied the leather boot the shaft and then re installed the plastic.

There is a thread here somewhere where a guy did it and did a write up.

The pain with that is that you have the initial 500 mile (maybe it was 1k?) break-in where your aren't supposed to maintain a certain RPM for an extended period of time. How are you getting along with doing that in the highway? At least with a manual though you can keep moving between gears easily to do that, just jump around between 4-5-6.

That seems crazy to me. I'm coming up on a year and only have ~4800 on mine. Hard to imagine putting on 10x as much each year!

The dealership actually told me there wasn’t a break in after I specifically asked. Luckily, the drive from Portland to my first stop was just over 500 miles of mountain and hilly highway so I was going between 4-6 pretty frequently.

That's really strange... It is right there in the manual. I'm surprised they would say that. Sounds like you were probably pretty good anyway with having to drive through the mountains.

So I've been missing a manual trans since I sold my Jeeps. I made the mistake/had the good idea to test drive a TRD Sport with a manual today. And they're now looking for one for me with the premium and tech packages.... whoops

am I harming my engine? If I'm on a hill and dont rev the engine high enough when letting the clutch out, the RPMs will drop low and create a clatter type sound like valves/rocker arms for a split second until I repress the clutch?

Your not helping the engine, that's for sure. You have a Sport, it has hill assist, so that should take the panic out of an up hill start away for you, which affords you the time to finesse the skinny pedal enough for angle of attack required to get that buggy moving in a smooth manner. Also, E-brake is your friend in those situations if required.

I was loaded up heavier than normal and full of fuel pulling out of the driveway a few hours ago. I don't usually do bad hill starts like this but because of the variables listed and the clutch engagement point felt like it was higher up in the pedal travel for some reason, I rattled/clattered twice before I got out of my driveway. I was only wondering if anyone has any knowledge of the durability of the parts used in this engine or technology that mitigates/takes preventative measures when under load at low RPM. The engine only made the noise less than a second both times before I depressed clutch to retry. There was no jerking/horse bucking vibration.

I'm no mechanical expert, but it sounds like you're not transferring enough power from the engine to the transmission to push the car up a hill smoothly, thus overworking both the engine and transmission which is why you're getting the clatter. Like TeecoTaco said, you're definitely not helping the engine.

Who needs hill start assist when you have a mechanical E brake?

Hill start assist drives me crazy.

I wouldn't worry about it if it only happened a couple times. If our trucks break after only a couple bad starts, there would be a shit ton of them in shops for repair or in junkyards. Even the best drivers have bad starts every now and then.

Ain’t that the truth, sometimes I’m like WTF happened there.....

Even with the accumulator delete and adjustment on the clutch pedal these clutches have no feel.
At some point I’m upgrading the clutch

I agree with this.....once and a while isn’t a big deal. The sticks we all learned on ran well for miles after our first hundred stalls. These trucks are tough enough to handle a couple bad shifts
