    Thats a tough one...

The ability to spread information is def a great advance in society... which has me torn between printing press, phone, and internet... but the internet has radically changed how we communicate with the world. And has broken down a lot of walls between countries.
It also plays a big role in the legalization of marijuana. All good things.

Without the printing press.. most of the world still wouldnt know how to read. Reading is key to all of these inventions.

Left the "n" off contribution in the poll. It won't let me change it for whatever reason. My bad.

    Pertaining to the poll:

I actually study innovation and creativity at Purdue currently. (Organizational Leadership)

The bicycle is commonly thought of by most in the field as the "most influential invention". I'll get back to this in a moment.

The wheel, (water, grinding or otherwise) is easily credited as advancing mankind, almost by itself. How the Romans utilized the technology changed the world as we know it, and allowed for inventions like the printing press (actually created and used first in China) to be valuable. The Romans knocked a hole in the wheel and added a "cam shaft" basically, allowing for a pounding motion. This gave way to the use of paper instead of sheep skin (which was really expensive). Now that the world had "paper" it needed to be able to print on it quickly to communicate and keep record. Thus, the printing press (China). Moveable type was the next innovation concerning the printing press.

The bicycle allowed people to move AWAY from city centers. People in mass were willing to live a mile or so away from town. This expansion of citizenry allowed for new techniques in agriculture to be invented, such as the v-plow and others. As technology expanded and exploded, people moved farther and farther away from city centers, which pushed technology to continue to create more innovations.

Yada yada yada, hubris takes over, H-bombs destroy Japan, and now we have a pocket sized device that can compute more data in seconds than has ever been transfered in the history of the world.

I was thinking along that point as well...

Without the press, the information would likely not have been spread quickly enough to eventually lead to the invention of the telegraph, phone, and eventually the internet.

But assuming we are only comparing their impact on society and not the link between the 3 I settled on internet.

I actually thought about including the wheel but thought it would make the poll a no contest.

Also, the reason the bicycle was so innovative is that you didnt have to feed it, it didnt die and when you look back though history, every.single outrageous/useful innovation in technology has been one that allowed people to expand/travel farther and connect to more people.

It added to the mobility of mankind.

Same as the car, and now the internet.
