Hey guys, thanks for letting me in on this. I’ve had my 11’ Tacoma v6 6 speed for 4 years now. Unfortunately I don’t get much time to take it off the road. It’s essentially a pavement pounder. That being said, I need to do some upgrades to improve fuel economy. I’m currently getting about 11.5 mpg. Muffler split open last week so I was looking for some advice on exhaust systems. Any upgrades I can make in the exhaust that will boost my fuel economy? Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to TacomaWorld!

When is the last time the spark plugs and air filter were changed? What size tires are you running? Do you drive it like a sports car? These are the biggest contributors to poor fuel economy.

I put E3 diamond fire plugs in about 12k ago and a new K&N air filter at the same time. I’m running 35” Nitto Trail Grapplers under a 4” pro comp suspension lift.

Well the E3 plugs aren’t doing you any favors. You should run the OEM Denso plugs for best performance.

Are you factoring in the increased tire size when calculating fuel economy? If not, you might be getting a little better mileage than you think.

But I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the biggest thing hurting your fuel economy is the 35’s. That is a way oversized tire, and Nitto’s are on the heavy side at that.

There’s no doubt the tires are hurting me there. You’re right. I’ll try swapping the plugs and see if that helps. Thanks for your input!

Welcome to TW! Sadly there really aren't any add-ons that will improve your fuel economy. That being said try these:

    • new engine air filter
    • clean your MAF sensor
    • new spark plugs
    • clean throttle body
    • drive like an old man
