Should I be concerned about this? 2017 TRD Sport

    Hi everyone,

I bought a 2017 TRD Sport this week and I am loving it so far. I had a Subaru Legacy for the past 7 years so this is a welcome change. However, I've managed to mess up already. I was backing into a parking spot, looked down at my backup came and my glasses hanging from the rear view were in the way, look back up at my rearview and then feel a bump. UGH! Great, first week I've had the truck and I've managed to back into a small tree. Here is the crack - https://imgur.com/gallery/ohR90JH

I'm beating myself up pretty good over this fairly small crack and I'm trying to determine if it's rightfully so. What I'm trying to determine is whether or not this is something I should be concerned with. My knowledge with automobiles/body work is pretty much non-existent so I'm hoping you all might be able to help.

From my research it appears as though the piece that is cracked is called the "bumper cap" on the passenger side of the vehicle. My concern is the potential for rust. I've been researching online and can't find any information on whether or not this piece is metal or plastic. (please be plastic *prayer hand emoji*).

is anyone able to confirm whether or not this make/model has plastic or metal bumper caps?

I'm looking forward to being a part of these forums and hopefully having questions/input on improving my vehicle and not how to fix or the potential to fix my mess ups.

    Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thankfully it wasn't a person or even a kid that you backed into. You got lucky. The difference in viewing angle and associated blind spots with driving a truck in comparison to a car are huge. It takes time to get used to it and know where to look. Have it fixed and move on. Just try to pay more attention when you are in reverse.

It’s plastic, don’t worry about it. It’s a bumper, it’s supposed to bump things right?

Hey welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear about your new truck. We all have those moments. It's part of life... and that's why the big insurance corporations capitalize on it :D.

Paint is not made to crack like that unfortunately, it will have to be sanded down and corrected. BUT.... I have a dew dents/dings from someone backing or nosing into me. If you can live with it, why not save some bucks. If you were going under 15mph you should be fine with everything else structurally. But that's just my 2¢. I would assume your ego probably took more of the tree than the truck did. Shake it off, these things are pretty bullet proof.

Thanks! Definitely a crush to the ego considering I only bought it this week. I don't think structurally behind it there would be any issues since I was going pretty slow backing into the spot.

It's definitely plastic? I just tried to throw a magnet on and it seemed to stick. The first few times it slid down but the bumper was wet so I'm not sure if it was just sticking because of the water kind of trapping it in place. I just read about the magnet thing so I actually really hope that it is just the water that made the magnet not move instead of it actually being metal.

Yes definitely plastic, there is a steel frame behind it that the magnet must have been attracted to.

I damaged one of mine off my sport and put in a wtb request in for sale section and some one sent me one for around 70 bucks that day.

Now you have an excuse to get a steel bumper

    Welcome! I'm a newbie too.
I almost always fix my vehicle's dings and scratches, but that one is so small, plastic, and in an area that is prone to getting bumped, I may just leave it. Maybe look for a deal on a new one or used one, in good time.
    First scratch always sucks.

Queue the guys that are going to tell the OP to have his frame looked at by a trained professional, 'just to be safe'. Maybe lawyer up and sue the tree while he's at it.

I remember being a busboy, and a new driver at the young age of 16. My boss came back in, and said "I need a ride home, the parking garage just backed in to Tammy's Mustang". At least he was smart enough to pull it back in the parking spot, admitted he was too drunk to drive, and get a ride. But he still always blamed the garage for hitting her Mustang :D

Ha! Luckily I was on my way home from work and not intoxicated. I would be even more mad at myself if I had a couple of drinks.

    Fresh gas.
Its plastic, get a vinyl band-aid decal and put it over it and continue on with your life! Also, be better!

    (That's what i'd do anyway.)

I literally just saw a 2019 honda odyssey with paper plates and a broken tail light at lunch today. It happens. New vehicle, getting used to the new shoes.

I wouldn't stress my friend. Its plastic, and on top of that barely noticeable. Not sure what direction you are going with your truck, but maybe in the future you will go with a steel or aluminum bumper anyway.
