TRD Sport vs Off Road

Ok dreaming about getting my Tacoma. In my research for my Gen 3 I noticed a few things. Here are some kind of dumb silly questions. 1) Why would the the Off Road have 16in tires and the Sport have 17in? Seams like the Off Road should have taller tires. 2) When I am searching (nationally) for both models I find far more used Sports (about 10 to 1) than Off Roads. Did Toyota produce far more Sport models than Off Road? Or is everyone selling the Sports to get the Off Road models? Your thought.....

 

For about the same money you get better off road capability with the TRD OR.....plus has a smoother ride than the sport.

 

But you don't get a skewp!

 

Go with the offroad. I only have a sport because it is the only access cab + manual transmission combo configuration. More bang for your buck when buying the OR.

Offroad has a bigger rear differential and locker in both AT and MT.

The only way to get the big 8.75” rear diff in the Sport is the MT

 

Tires are the same size. There sport has bigger wheels, color matched fenders, and a hood scoop (non functional). Off road gets the bigger diff, rear locker, fancy brake booster, Bilstein suspension.

IMO the sport you're paying for looks, off road your paying for better capability off road. Just depends on what your into.

 

Sport if you want a stiffer, more sportscar-like driving experience. Along with more aesthetically pleasing package. (Scoop, painted trim)

Offroad if you are a delicate person who needs a softer ride and don't care about the unfinished look with the black trim.

 

I went through the same thing almost a year ago and went with the Off Road and LOVE IT!!!!!!

 

On your first point, you mean 16 inch WHEELS vs 17 inch WHEELS. More tire is better for offroading generally. Hence more tire and less wheel on the OR.

 

I got a Sport over an OR for a few reasons

Manual Tranny w/ Access cab

Price. Dealerships will. Not. Budge. On the Off Road prices. I got my Sport for $31k (sticker sheet at 36+)

Note: Off Road also get terrain select with the 4x4 (wish I had) and Crawl Control for the Auto (meh)

All of that being said, first thing I did to my sport was swap the hood with an OR of the same year and paint code, and then swapped wheels/tires with another OR.

 

The painted trim is subjective. I think the black fenders are mean and clean

 

Totally agree. OR Is better bang for buck. The only reason im driving a Sport is because i wanted MT in DCSB (wish they made DCLB MT)

Sport gets sport tuned suspension which is awesome on road! Doesnt feel like driving a pick up at all, and of course the skeeeeeewp, makes you a real TRD BRO .

Also gets color matched fender flares and rear bumper. You could get color matched rear bumper and fenders in OR with premium and tech package.

MT gets 4.3 rear end which solves the low end torque problem in AT owners, just sayin'...

 

I've never seen numbers for OR vs Sport production. On here it seems like most people have an off road. But it also seems like alot of people have MTs when in reality only like 5% of tacomas sold do. I bet they just sell alot more sports, but enthusiasts buy more off roads.

I agree, black fenders look alot better. They look like poo after the first 4x4 trail though.

 

I had the same dilemma, after test driving both and seeing them in person went with the OR hands down. I liked the look of the black plastics vs the color matched fenders. Also preferred the visibility of the no scoop vs scoop. The part that sold me the most though was the soft cloud like suspension.

 

Traditionally the off road has a smaller rim with the same size overall tire diameter for better offroad capability. Especially when airng down.

 

Meguiars interior retailer is a very cheap option to make them black again after a wash

 

Sport for aesthetic purposes, I love the sport hood. It gives the truck such a eye catching look.

 

It's the scratches that bug me

 

Which one do you think is better?
While the OR has better performance suspension off road, your going to lift it anyway. All boils down to skewp. Every thing else you’re going to be moding.
