I agree. Tall skinny sounds a bit counterintuitive. I mean, we air down to gain a larger contact patch...?

Yes and no, skinny’s give you a longer patch front to back when aired down. Wide gives you wider patch aired down.

Skinny also gives you better cut when going through snow and mud. Wider tires do better going over. Both have their benefits and downsides

I have no idea what you’re talking about. 10ply tires are off the shelf and cost a few bucks more than most 4-6 ply tires... check literally ANY tire site.

A pizza cutter gives you a larger/longer contact patch when aired down. It's a better choice for anything but deep mud/snow or sand.

Most 255/85/16s will actually have a wider tread patch than the stock 265s.

That makes no sense. The 255 and the 265 in those numbers are the actual number in milimeters of how wide the tire is. The 85 is the height of the sidewall. Don't think the sidewall is measured in mm. Pretty sure its a percentage of the width of the tire.

A 255/85/16 Cooper stmaxx has a tread width of 8.2" and a 265/70/16 Michelin defender has an 8.1" tread width.

Did some googling, seems you are correct Tread width varies by manufactuerer, but the overall width of the tire is the measurment I was reffering to. If the two tires were the same (cooper stmaxx) whichever one had the higher first number would have a higher tread width

Yup. I just chimed in on the tread width vs stock tires because of your reply here when he was comparing the 255s to his stock tires.

When we talk about “skinnies” I think it’s important to compare apples to apples.

A 255/85 is a skinny tire that will provide a larger contact patch than the stock 265/70 because it’s a larger tire.

However, when people are upgrading tires they are usually deciding between a 255/85 and a 285/75. These tires are the same circumference so the skinny tire is no longer than the 285 aired down. The 285/75 being wider will have a larger contact patch.
