I bought a barely used 2018 Tacoma and love it but I only received one key. I asked for a fob key and the salesman said they'd get me one. Two months later no key. So I reminded the salesman and his boss and they quickly scheduled me for a visit. The tech guy came out and said that my version of the Tacoma doesn't allow the use of a programmable key. I would have thought a 2018 Tacoma would all have programmable keys...are they shining me on or is it true....

    o_O Something sounds funky there.

At first I was going to ask whether you have the push-to-start fob or you have the key-in-ignition, but then I realized it doesnt matter. Either style is replaceable.

The fob (push-to-start) costs about $500-600 to replace and program to the truck, but it can be done. The dealer is BSing you because they dont want to foot the cost.

I hope you got that part of the bargain on paper, for your sake.

You're doing better than most then. I reread your original post, trying to figure it out. Tacos come in three configurations: key only with no remote (rare, only on base level SR trims), key with remote (most SR, all SR5 & manual transmissions), or remote with push-to-start (all TRD & limited automatics). I'm assuming that youre wanting a duplicate example of the type of key that you have, and not one from a higher trim level, right?

Since you have it on paper you can force their hand. Give them the option of getting you a genuine Toyota key, or you can offer to have another dealer call them for a reimbursement quote.
