Strictly my opinion here and why I ditched my cap for bed rails when I got my tent:
    1. I did not have a reinforced cap and did not want to do it myself for fear of messing it up and ruining the cap.
    2. I wanted to keep the tent as low profile as possible. It’s basically a wind sail when it’s on top of a cap.

Yup me as well. I was really nervous about my cab supporting the wieght of the tent OR. Plus, tucked behind the cab = better gas mileage.

Rails are cheaper, tent sits lower with my half height rails means lower center of gravity and more aerodynamic. Thats why I did it.

We had our tent on a custom made rack attached to the bed bolts back in 2014...We then moved to a cap and didn't notice any difference in fuel economy. I do like that the bed space became usable again, secure and most important dry. I hated the tent in the bed space. We do remove the tent in the winter when it is not is use. With it being on the shell we have spent a lot of time on rough roads and have yet to experience a issue. We do have the bed stiffeners as well.

Most people that wheel hard don’t have them on racks from what I’ve seen. That weight up top on hardcore trails will make the truck feel quite top heavy. I think they look the best on a cap but for ease of mind and ease of on and off I put mine on a bed rack since my truck is a DD. I have a rack system that uses a tonneau cover so I have more storage knee things out of the weather.

I went from a camper shell to a bed cover and rack by the way.

The bed space is a must. I’ve had mine over the bed for almost a year now and miss it. I’m leaning towards a trailer build now so 1. I can get my bed space and cap back, and 2. So the girlfriend can tow the trailer/tent/camping goods also.

Here's my "uncool" 2nd gen double Cab with 5' bed with some overhang. The tent is goofy looking by itself, but not so bad once the bed is all packed up. The tent is as big as a small house, it's amazing!

My personal issue isn't that it's uncool, it's that you're putting alot of weight and stress on that rear-most rack bar and that's putting a lot of stress on the bed. If you're sleeping three wide, that end person is pretty much 100% on that support which is on the weakest part of the bed.

IMO if someone is going to hang off that much, a rack like Brute Force or Leitner with the vertical supports to the bed bolts is the better way to go.

I thought about adding one of those trailer hitch extensions to it for additional support in the rear, but once it's mounted and you get inside it, it seems unnecessary. We fit 2 adults and a 9 year old in it, with our heads all facing towards the front of the truck when we sleep.

I'm 5'8, so i'll have to check, but I'm not sure my feet extend too far past the last bed bar. I think the last bed bar would be around where my knees would be. So as long as I tell the kid not to jump on the bed on the far side, there's not too much torque placed on the far end of the Cal King Sized bed.

Some possibilities for reinforcement could be steel vs the stock aluminum channels. Or a tailgate extender type thing. Or just a shorter, less spacious tent.

That wouldn't concern me so much then but I'm too tall for that to work haha. As is we flip our normal sleeping sides so I can be closer to the cab in mine.

I wanted to place my weight over the bars and not the fold out portion as well. Nothing weirder than having 1 side of the bed for a decade, then switching sleeping positions.

Materials used. The ruggedized has heavier duty cloth and a metal base, compared to compressed wood.

A bunch of extra weight and a bunch of extra build quality. Beefier poles, beefier fabric, beefier flooring and hinges. I recommend it if you don't mind the ~60lbs and can swing the extra cash - it's a level above most other tents on the market.

Finally pulled the trigger on my uncles rtt He was selling to me for $1250 it was between this or buying the go FSR Trilayer M 55 for 2220$ after shipping and taxes decided I was getting a hell of a deal and so I pulled the trigger on the Hardshell. It’s a barely used Roofnest Eagle.
