Whatever the rep says may set precedent, and if there are other vehicles with this problem, that could be a big deal for Toyota. Not surprised he wants the higher ups to sign-off on whatever action takes place.

If the truck had a VIN by this point in the assembly (probably did), they may also be able to figure out what monkey screwed this up to begin with, and either can his ass, or give his union rep a good talking to.

They have to make good decision here as that is a load bearing part. If it were to fail with a load on the tailgate someone could get seriously hurt. This is probably why it is being pushed up hill.

Hopefully I will hear back today with a decision from Toyota, I'm happy I didn't buy a Highlander, they loaned me one and it's not too bad, feels cheap and gets the same or worse MPG as the truck.

Apparently if they fix it the right way the whole driver side bed panel will also have to be replaced, which is good cause the TRD sticker is crooked on that side and I'm losing horsepower lol.

I think if they try to run the patch fix I may bring up and push for a warranty extension.

Crossing my fingers they decide to fix it correctly though I doubt they'll throw and perks (warranty/accessories cash) my way. I figure they'll suck up about 14 days in the shop total. Brought up in the case that I'm missing service records (Toyota Owners app) so I've got to get them to fill those in too. A little disappointed in Toyota and the dealer but I'm really fucking hoping that they don't end up being an asshat dealership, I've got to have them add some other notes to my 5,000 mile service record as well (rumble strip braking under 20 MPH and headlights/heater power dimming when I press the brake intermittently).

UPDATE: Toyota authorized the patch fix which I'm okay with for a few reasons:

    • They would have to pull the whole driver side bed panel, break all the welds, re-weld.

    • They would have to then reprint the whole driver side bed panel, which I don't want to deal with a shit color match being possible.

    • I've been assured in writing that any future issues, if they happen, i.e. Corrosion etc. Toyota will handle and fix.

The only damage was apparently where the tab of the washer slot was so fuck it, I'd rather not have them crack open a ton of welds and deal with paint matching. It won't cause a catastrophic failure.

Case closed, overall rating of the dealer and Toyota is so-so. Dealer has been understanding and have their asses in gear.

Well, glad to hear your ordeal is over. You seem to be a very patient and understanding man! Kudos to you.

Imagine if this problem had occurred to some of our more vocal members here!?

Hah! 200 pages of bitching and "I'm trading for a Ford" lol. I understand the dynamics of assembly/tear down and would just rather have less people pull apart less shit. If they sent it back to the factory then I'd be okay. Not a local body shop with junior fiddling with it. If it were engine issues I'd probably blow a blood vessel I'd be so pissed. I'm also lucky to know a bunch of machinist/diesel shop/offroad buddies that have great insight to what you don't want somebody to fuck with and take apart and what issues are worth pushing too far. Their biggest concern was issues down the road if they did take all those body panels apart.

Did they give you one of them good old fashioned case numbers?

Lol yep, they fixed the bed thing back in January of ‘17, I opened another case recently and asked if all my case information could be sent to me. Interestingly enough they can’t because it’s considered “proprietary information”.
